Macron’s Recognition of Palestine Faces Criticism from US, Israel

French President Emmanuel Macron announced on March 14, 2024, that France will formally recognize Palestine, a decision that has provoked immediate backlash from both Israel and the United States. The announcement was made public during a press briefing and is set to be officially presented at the United Nations General Assembly in September 2024.

The recognition of Palestine has been met with strong criticism from US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who condemned the move as detrimental to peace efforts. In a post on social media platform X, Rubio stated, “The United States strongly rejects Macron’s plan to recognize a Palestinian state at the UN General Assembly. This reckless decision only serves Hamas propaganda and sets back peace. It is a slap in the face to the victims of October 7.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also expressed outrage, labeling the announcement a betrayal from a close ally. He warned that a Palestinian state under current conditions would serve as a “launch pad to annihilate Israel.” Netanyahu asserted, “Let’s be clear: the Palestinians do not seek a state alongside Israel; they seek a state instead of Israel.”

Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz echoed these sentiments, describing the decision as “a disgrace and a surrender to terrorism.” Katz emphasized that Israel would prevent the creation of any Palestinian entity that could threaten its security.

In contrast, Macron’s announcement received a warm welcome from several European and Arab leaders. He shared a letter addressed to Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, pledging to encourage other nations to follow France’s lead. Macron stated, “Consistent with its historic commitment to a just and lasting peace in the Middle East, I have decided that France will recognize the state of Palestine.”

Praise from European and Arab Leaders

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, whose own government has recognized Palestinian statehood, praised Macron’s decision. He said, “Together, we must protect what Netanyahu is trying to destroy. The two-state solution is the only solution.”

Jordan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs applauded France’s recognition as a significant step toward peace, with spokesperson Sufian Qudah affirming, “This is a step in the right direction toward the realization of the two-state solution and the end of the occupation.”

The Saudi Foreign Ministry also characterized Macron’s announcement as a “historic decision.” They reiterated their call for nations that have not yet recognized Palestine to take similar actions that support peace and the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.

Senior Palestinian Authority official Hussein al-Sheikh welcomed the announcement, emphasizing that it reflects France’s commitment to international law and the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination. “This decision reinforces our demand for the establishment of our independent state,” he concluded.
