Netanyahu Declares Palestinian Authority Excluded from Gaza Governance
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stated that the West Bank-based Palestinian Authority (PA) will not play any role in the governance of post-war Gaza. During a meeting with US envoy Steve Witkoff in Jerusalem, Netanyahu emphasized that the PA would not be involved in administering the territory “in any way.” This statement follows ongoing discussions regarding the future administration of Gaza after the recent conflict.
According to a statement from Netanyahu’s office, the Prime Minister reiterated that the PA’s involvement in Gaza’s governance is unacceptable. The PA’s role remains ambiguous under the Gaza ceasefire plan proposed by former US President Donald Trump, which does not clearly define its responsibilities. In the interim, the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza (NCAG) has been established to manage daily operations until the PA completes a reform program.
This meeting took place shortly after the reopening of the Rafah crossing between Gaza and Egypt, making it the second interaction between Netanyahu and Witkoff in less than two weeks. Netanyahu’s office also reiterated its firm stance on disarming Hamas and demilitarizing Gaza before any reconstruction efforts can begin.
The Israeli government has consistently maintained that neither Hamas nor the PA should govern Gaza post-conflict. Recently, Netanyahu’s office expressed concern over the NCAG’s logo, which features a symbol associated with the PA. The statement from Netanyahu’s office asserted, “Israel will not accept the use of a Palestinian Authority symbol; the Palestinian Authority will have no part in the administration of Gaza.”
In response, the NCAG addressed these concerns in a post on X, stating that it has been exploring various visual concepts for its branding. The committee emphasized its commitment to humanitarian relief and the establishment of a viable civilian administration for Gaza, declaring, “That’s the conversation that matters.”
This ongoing discourse highlights the complexities surrounding governance in Gaza following the recent conflict and raises questions about the PA’s future role in the region. The international community continues to monitor developments closely as efforts for reconstruction and governance evolve.
