Pope Leo XIV Calls for Compassion and Peace in Christmas Address
Pope Leo XIV, the first pope born in the United States, delivered a poignant Christmas Day address on December 25, 2023, urging the Catholic faithful to reject indifference toward those suffering globally. Speaking to thousands gathered in St Peter’s Square for the traditional Urbi et Orbi blessing, he called for compassion and solidarity with individuals affected by wars, migration, and poverty.
During his first Christmas address, delivered from the loggia overlooking the square, Pope Leo XIV emphasized the need for empathy towards those enduring hardship. The address followed a Christmas Mass held inside St Peter’s Basilica, where rain earlier in the day subsided, allowing the pope to greet the crowd in his popemobile. He revived the tradition of offering Christmas greetings in multiple languages, receiving enthusiastic responses when he spoke in English and Spanish, the latter reflecting his time as a missionary and archbishop in Peru.
Promoting Peace and Solidarity
In his message, Pope Leo XIV articulated the role every individual can play in fostering peace through humility and responsibility. “If we truly enter into the suffering of others and stand in solidarity with the weak and the oppressed, then the world would change,” he stated.
He particularly called for justice and stability in regions facing turmoil, including Lebanon, Gaza, Israel, and Syria, while also remembering the plight of those affected by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The pope’s compassionate plea extended to victims of wars, political instability, and religious persecution across various countries, such as Sudan, South Sudan, Mali, and Congo.
Pope Leo XIV further urged dialogue to address the challenges faced in Latin America, advocating for reconciliation in Myanmar and the restoration of friendship between Thailand and Cambodia. He also highlighted the need for support for those impacted by natural disasters in South Asia and Oceania.
Message of Hope and Responsibility
Reflecting on the significance of Christmas, the pope noted that Jesus took upon himself human frailty, identifying with the marginalized. He expressed solidarity with those who have lost everything, such as the residents of Gaza, and those grappling with hunger and poverty, including the Yemeni people. The pope also acknowledged the struggles of refugees and migrants seeking better lives across the Mediterranean and the American continent.
In his Christmas Day Mass, Pope Leo XIV led the congregation in prayer beneath the ornate decorations of St Peter’s Basilica. He emphasized that peace can only emerge through genuine dialogue. “There will be peace when our monologues are interrupted and, enriched by listening, we fall to our knees before the humanity of the other,” he remarked.
The event marked a significant moment for Pope Leo XIV, as he celebrated his first Christmas Mass with thousands of attendees, many capturing the occasion on their smartphones. This Christmas season also signals the conclusion of the Holy Jubilee Year, which will officially end on January 6, 2024, during the Catholic Epiphany holiday that commemorates the visit of the Three Wise Men to the infant Jesus.
As the pope concluded his address, he reinforced the message of hope and compassion, urging all to look beyond themselves and work towards a more just and peaceful world.
