Putin Invited to Trump’s Global Peace Initiative Amid Tensions
Russian President Vladimir Putin has received an invitation to join a new “Board of Peace,” an initiative led by former US President Donald Trump aimed at addressing global conflicts, including the ongoing situation in Gaza. The Kremlin confirmed the invitation on Monday, with spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stating that Russia is seeking to understand the details of the offer from Washington. This development comes as the full-scale invasion of Ukraine approaches its fourth year, raising questions about Putin’s potential commitment to a peace agreement.
The “Board of Peace” is designed to oversee governance and reconstruction efforts in Gaza, a region that has seen significant conflict and humanitarian crises. Trump has reached out to various global leaders to join this board, which he chairs. The invitation to Putin is particularly controversial, given the current geopolitical climate and Russia’s ongoing military actions in Ukraine.
International Reactions and Concerns
The invitation has drawn criticism, especially from Israeli officials. Bezalel Smotrich, Israel’s far-right Finance Minister, described the initiative as detrimental to Israel’s interests. He urged the US to reconsider the board, asserting that Gaza’s future is intrinsically linked to Israel’s own. During a recent ceremony inaugurating the new Yatziv settlement in the occupied West Bank, Smotrich stated, “Gaza is ours; its future will affect our future more than anyone else’s.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also expressed concerns, stating that the formation of the committee was not coordinated with the Israeli government and contradicts its policies. The US is expected to announce the official list of board members soon, potentially during the upcoming World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
In addition to Russia, the European Union’s executive arm has also been invited, with spokesperson Olof Gill confirming that Commission President Ursula von der Leyen received an invitation. While it remains unclear whether the EU will formally accept, Gill emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach to resolving the Gaza conflict.
Structure and Funding of the Board
The board is set to oversee an executive committee responsible for implementing a two-phase peace plan for Gaza. This plan includes the deployment of an international security force, disarmament of Hamas, and the reconstruction of the war-devastated region. A contribution of $1 billion is required for permanent membership on the board, with funds earmarked for rebuilding efforts.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer indicated that the UK is discussing the Board of Peace with its allies but has not confirmed whether he has received a formal invitation. Starmer acknowledged the importance of progressing with the second phase of the Gaza peace plan, expressing the UK’s willingness to contribute.
As international leaders await further developments, the implications of Trump’s peace initiative and its potential impact on the region and beyond remain to be seen.
