Russia Criticizes European Role in US-Led Peace Talks on Ukraine

The Kremlin has voiced concerns regarding the involvement of Kyiv and several European capitals in US-led negotiations aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Russian officials assert that this participation is undermining the prospects for a peaceful resolution. Nevertheless, they have expressed openness to potential talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and French President Emmanuel Macron.

Discussions between US and Russian envoys took place in Miami over the weekend, focusing on a potential peace plan that was leaked last month. This plan has prompted heightened efforts by Ukraine and its European allies, who perceived it as biased towards Moscow. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and other European leaders have indicated a growing comfort with the draft proposals. However, Russia has signaled it will reject any modifications to key components of the original document, raising doubts about the feasibility of a swift diplomatic resolution to the largest conflict in Europe since World War II.

Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov stated, “I am sure that the proposals that the Europeans and Ukrainians have made, or are trying to make, definitely do not improve the document and do not improve the possibility of achieving long-term peace.” He emphasized the Kremlin’s desire for the US and its allies to adhere to agreements reached in previous negotiations, particularly referencing a summit in Alaska in August between Putin and former US President Donald Trump.

As the discussions continued in Miami, Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev engaged with US representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who is notably Trump’s son-in-law. Following a day of meetings, Dmitriev described Saturday’s talks as “constructive,” although no specifics about the discussions have been disclosed.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov explained that Dmitriev’s visit aimed to gather information regarding the proposals being discussed by the Americans and Europeans, which would subsequently be reported back to Putin. Peskov added that the Russian leader is amenable to a meeting with Macron, following the French president’s call for Europe to engage in dialogue with Russia to avoid being marginalized in peace efforts.

The French administration welcomed the Kremlin’s willingness to consider talks, stating, “We will decide in the coming days on the best way to proceed.” The Élysée Palace clarified that any discussions would occur “in full transparency” with Kyiv and European allies, aiming for a “solid and lasting peace” for Ukraine.

The French presidency noted that the invasion of Ukraine and Putin’s obstinacy had previously ended any possibility for dialogue since the onset of the all-out war in 2022. Nevertheless, they acknowledged that as the prospect of a ceasefire and peace negotiations becomes clearer, communication with Putin could again be beneficial.

Zelenskiy remains open to the idea of a summit involving Trump and Putin. However, Ushakov remarked, “Until now, no one has seriously talked about this idea, and it is not being worked on, as far as I know.”

As the situation evolves, the international community continues to watch closely for any developments that could lead to an end to hostilities in Ukraine.
