Seán Canney Discusses Regional Independents’ Role in Government
Seán Canney, a member of the Irish Parliament since 2016, has taken a leading role within the Regional Independents Group as they navigate their responsibilities in the current government. In a recent interview, Canney addressed the dynamics within his group and his collaboration with fellow Independent Michael Lowry, especially following the contentious speaking rights incident that unfolded at the start of this Dáil term.
Canney, who represents Galway East, spoke candidly about the political environment surrounding him. He leads the Regional Independents during weekly discussions with Taoiseach Micheál Martin and Tánaiste Simon Harris. His group has been pivotal in shaping government policy, even amidst the political challenges they face.
Working Relationships and Group Dynamics
Canney described his interactions with Lowry, who has faced scrutiny due to past actions highlighted by the Moriarty Tribunal, as constructive. He stated, “I’d describe him as a wise man, from a political point of view. His advice to TDs who are new… is very important.” This acknowledgment underscores Canney’s belief in the value of experience within their coalition.
The Regional Independents consist of a diverse group, including TDs such as Marian Harkin, Barry Heneghan, and Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran. Canney emphasized that the group functions cohesively, valuing each member’s contributions equally. “There’s no prima donnas in our group,” he noted, reinforcing a culture of collaboration and mutual respect.
Reflecting on past conflicts, Canney mentioned his previous disputes with Moran over junior ministry roles in 2018. Despite the disagreements, he maintains a positive relationship with Moran now, focusing on their shared goal of serving the public effectively. “It’s not about me. It’s about getting things done that will help people,” he stated.
Government Achievements and Future Goals
As a minister of state in the Department of Transport, Canney is attuned to the operational demands of government, noting a significant increase in his workload compared to his previous tenure from 2016 to 2020. He pointed to the importance of streamlining regulations to enhance efficiency. “A key focus of this Government has been making delivery more efficient,” he explained, praising Jack Chambers, the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform, for his role in these efforts.
Despite a decrease in the number of bills passed—only 21 in 2025 compared to 44 in 2024—Canney expressed confidence in the government’s direction. He highlighted the success of public transport improvements, stating, “The most complaints I get now are about buses being full, trains being full, and standing room only.” This reflects a growing demand for public transport that the government must address.
Looking ahead, Canney remains optimistic about the coalition’s future. He commended both Harris and Martin for their leadership, especially in the wake of Harris’s recent appointment as Minister for Finance following Paschal Donohoe‘s exit from politics in November. “He’s making a fair fist of it,” Canney remarked, indicating his support for Harris’s capabilities in the finance role.
Canney’s commitment to making a tangible difference in his constituency remains strong. He expressed satisfaction with the impact of his work, noting that receiving gratitude from constituents reinforces the importance of their political efforts. “It’s a very fulfilling job, and that’s that now. Long may that continue,” he concluded.
In a political landscape often characterized by division, Canney’s approach emphasizes collaboration and progress, highlighting the potential of the Regional Independents within the broader framework of government.
