Five Teams Secure €2.6 Million for Renewable Gas Innovations
Five research teams have been awarded a total of €2.6 million as part of the co-funded Research Ireland – Gas Networks Ireland Innovation Challenge. This initiative aims to advance renewable gas production, improve energy system integration, and develop intelligent technologies for gas networks. The funding supports projects that focus on enhancing the efficiency and commercial viability of biomethane and biohydrogen production, while also accelerating the incorporation of renewable gases into Ireland’s energy landscape.
The selected teams are tasked with creating innovative solutions that address critical challenges in the energy sector. Their work will not only contribute to the decarbonisation of Ireland’s energy system but will also foster collaboration across various sectors. Dr. Diarmuid O’Brien, CEO of Research Ireland, emphasized the importance of this collaborative approach, stating, “The research these teams are undertaking will support Ireland on the path to decarbonisation. Cross-sector collaboration is vital for Ireland to meet its national commitments to be climate-neutral by 2050.”
Focus on Innovation and Stakeholder Engagement
The Challenge adopts a unique model, integrating end users within the research teams and engaging key stakeholders from the project’s inception. This method aims to ensure that the innovations produced have practical applications and deliver tangible benefits to the energy sector. Dr. O’Brien expressed anticipation for the upcoming developments, noting, “I look forward to seeing the teams progress their solutions over the coming months.”
Bobby Gleeson, Chief Operations Officer at Gas Networks Ireland, highlighted the significance of these projects in driving innovation. “These projects represent innovation in action – turning cutting-edge research into solutions that can strengthen Ireland’s energy system, improve resilience and support our journey to net zero,” Gleeson stated. He added that the Gas Innovation Fund plays a crucial role in facilitating this research, allowing for the rapid development of technologies aimed at decarbonising Ireland’s gas network and enabling the large-scale integration of renewable gases.
Teams and Their Objectives
The five teams receiving funding are focused on diverse aspects of renewable gas technologies. Their projects encompass a range of objectives that aim to enhance the performance and sustainability of Ireland’s energy infrastructure. By leveraging advanced research and technology, these teams are poised to make significant contributions to the country’s energy goals.
As Ireland moves toward a more sustainable future, initiatives like the Research Ireland – Gas Networks Ireland Innovation Challenge represent critical steps in fostering innovation and collaboration. The successful implementation of these projects could lead to a more resilient and environmentally friendly energy system, aligning with national and global climate objectives.
