Guinness Celebrates ‘Pint Playmakers’ Ahead of Ireland vs England Match
As the highly anticipated match between Ireland and England approaches in the Guinness Six Nations, new research reveals the significant role of social dynamics surrounding this event. Commissioned by Guinness and conducted by Bounce Insights, the study highlights how the tournament transforms local pubs into community hubs, driven by dedicated individuals dubbed ‘Pint Playmakers.’
According to the research, nearly two in three Irish adults identify as rugby enthusiasts, showcasing a deep connection to the sport. The Guinness Six Nations inspires approximately 70% of Irish adults to plan social gatherings, particularly in pubs. This reflects the tournament’s central role in the nation’s social calendar. Ahead of the upcoming clash on March 25, 2023, a staggering 93% of fans across Ireland are set to organise social events around this match, emphasizing its importance in the cultural landscape.
Regional Insights and Social Trends
The enthusiasm for rugby is not uniform across Ireland, as the research reveals interesting regional differences. In Ulster, all surveyed fans plan to host events for the Ireland vs England game, while Munster fans show a high level of engagement, with 94% intending to gather for the Ireland vs Scotland match. The rivalry between the teams remains a focal point, with 90% of respondents affirming its significance regardless of team performance.
The research also uncovers a charming peculiarity in Connacht, where Valentine’s Day is considered a more significant social event than the Guinness Six Nations. This highlights the diversity in social priorities across different regions of the island.
While the pub remains a staple for viewing matches, the study indicates a generational shift in how people engage with the Six Nations. Among younger fans aged 18-24, 40% prefer to watch games in pubs, drawn by the lively atmosphere. In contrast, the over-55 demographic leans towards watching at home, with 55% preferring a more intimate setting.
In Dublin, unique habits emerge, as residents often favour watching matches at a friend’s house, reflecting diverse social traditions.
Understanding the ‘Pint Playmakers’
The research identifies four distinct types of ‘Pint Playmakers’ who contribute to the vibrant social atmosphere during match days.
First, the group chat instigator, predominantly female, plays a crucial role in rallying friends and ensuring everyone is accounted for. Next is the first-round rally, where males are twice as likely to initiate social plans by ordering the first round of drinks.
The booking boss, primarily in the 25-34 age group, frequently handles reservations, securing prime viewing spots. Lastly, the pub navigator, typically aged 55 and older, excels in suggesting venues, showcasing their experience in creating memorable match-day experiences.
Collectively, these roles enhance the communal enjoyment of rugby, reinforcing the importance of pubs as social anchors. During the tournament, nearly 70% of Irish adults are likely to plan pub gatherings, with 58% considering pubs central to their social lives, a sentiment particularly strong among 63% of males.
When it comes to refreshments, a clear preference emerges. An impressive 89% of pub-goers during the Guinness Six Nations choose to start their experience with Guinness, solidifying its status as the iconic drink of the tournament and a symbol of celebration within the community.
The findings underscore the profound impact of the Guinness Six Nations on social interactions across Ireland, illustrating how sports can foster community spirit and enhance social planning. As the match day approaches, the excitement is palpable, revealing how deeply intertwined rugby is with Ireland’s cultural identity.
