Innovative Trials Launched in Ireland to Combat Chronic Pain

A groundbreaking initiative has emerged from Ireland, where a consortium of MedTech and digital healthcare companies, along with university researchers, is set to launch world-first clinical trials aimed at providing long-term relief for those suffering from chronic musculoskeletal pain. Funded by a substantial investment of €6.6 million from the Government’s Disruptive Technologies Innovation Fund, this partnership includes key players such as CrannMed, Salaso Health Solutions, the University of Galway’s Institute for Clinical Trials, and the RCSI University of Medicine and Health Sciences. The announcement was made by Peter Burke, Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, signalling a significant step forward in chronic pain management.

Details of the RECAP Project

The consortium will spearhead the RECAP project (Resorbable Embolization for Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain), which will involve a series of clinical trials coordinated by the University of Galway and RCSI. The trials will integrate two complementary technologies designed to improve the quality of life for patients suffering from chronic pain.

Participants in the initial trial will receive an injection designed to selectively block blood flow to the pain site, thereby reducing inflammation and targeting the rogue nerve endings responsible for their discomfort. This innovative approach is expected to provide a more effective solution compared to traditional treatments.

The second arm of the trial will focus on patient recovery, utilizing an AI-enabled self-management platform that offers real-time support.
