Ireland Launches Innovative Trials for Chronic Pain Relief

A new consortium consisting of MedTech and digital healthcare companies, along with university researchers, has initiated world-first clinical trials aimed at providing long-term relief for individuals suffering from chronic musculoskeletal pain. This groundbreaking effort, known as the RECAP project (Resorbable Embolization for Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain), has been awarded €6.6 million in funding from the Irish government, as announced by Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Peter Burke.

The collaboration involves key players such as CrannMed, Salaso Health Solutions, University of Galway’s Institute for Clinical Trials, and RCSI University of Medicine and Health Sciences. These institutions aim to transform the treatment landscape for chronic pain, offering patients access to advanced therapies at an earlier stage than typically possible.

Innovative Treatment Approaches

The clinical trials will incorporate two complementary technologies designed to enhance outcomes for patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain. Participants will benefit from an advanced pain treatment developed by CrannMed, paired with a recovery program from Salaso that is supported by clinical specialists.

During the initial trial, patients will receive an injection that selectively blocks blood flow to the painful area, effectively reducing inflammation and targeting nerve endings responsible for chronic pain. This method aims to provide significant relief while minimizing reliance on traditional treatments, such as steroid injections.

Alongside this injection, the second trial will evaluate patient recovery through an AI-enabled self-management platform. This innovative approach will allow for real-time monitoring and support, helping patients navigate their recovery journey more effectively.

Potential Impact and Future Directions

The consortium is poised to make significant advancements in pain treatment methodologies. According to the project leaders, the combined benefits of their innovative treatment and technologies could surpass the effectiveness of current standard care practices by a substantial margin.

Liam Farrissey, Chief Executive Officer of CrannMed, expressed the rewarding nature of assembling such a skilled consortium within Ireland’s ecosystem. He highlighted the project’s potential to offer timely treatment options for Irish patients, stating that success in these trials could revolutionize chronic pain management practices.

Similarly, Aoife Ní Mhuirí, CEO of Salaso, underscored the importance of providing treatment closer to home, which could save both time and resources for patients and the healthcare system. She noted that this sustainable and accessible approach could set a new standard for global pain management strategies.

Professor Fidelma Dunne, Director of the Institute for Clinical Trials at University of Galway, believes the project will significantly change how chronic joint and muscle pain is treated. She emphasized that the innovative trial aims to provide effective, long-term relief without resorting to surgery or addictive medications.

The University of Galway’s Institute for Clinical Trials will play a vital role in leading and coordinating this clinical trial program, focusing on innovation in trial design and execution. With the backing of the Disruptive Technologies Innovation Fund, this initiative stands to not only improve patient outcomes but also advance scientific understanding in pain measurement and imaging techniques.
