US Army Plans Deployment of Advanced Humanoid Robots by 2027

The US Army is set to explore innovative technology for military applications, with plans to deploy humanoid robots designed to enhance battlefield capabilities. Foundation Future Industries, a company based in California, is at the forefront of this initiative, developing the Phantom robot. This advanced robot stands at 1.8 metres tall and weighs 82 kg, capable of carrying over 20 kg of equipment or weapons.

The design of the Phantom robot emphasizes human-like mobility and adaptability, making it suitable for a variety of military roles. Its upper torso is equipped with essential components such as sensors, computers, cameras, and batteries, allowing it to navigate environments built for humans. The lower torso features actuators and an advanced balancing system, enabling the robot to traverse rough terrain, climb stairs, and maintain stability while handling heavy loads.

Multiple Roles in Military Operations

Foundation Future Industries envisions the Phantoms undertaking numerous tasks on the battlefield. Their potential roles include surveillance, logistical support, and transporting weapons and equipment. Importantly, these robots are also intended to replace personnel in high-risk situations, such as exploring confined spaces or caves where human soldiers may face significant danger.

The company’s ambitious plan includes producing 50,000 Phantom robots for the US military by 2027. While these robots will not possess full autonomy in decision-making during combat, Foundation believes that their deployment could alter strategic calculations and deter potential conflicts.

According to Sankaet Pathak, CEO of Foundation Future Industries, a demonstration involving 100,000 Phantoms has the potential to prevent wars entirely. In an article published in Forbes, he suggested that the mere presence of these formidable machines could discourage adversaries from initiating hostilities.

Concerns About Military Robotics

Despite the enthusiasm surrounding the Phantom robot, experts urge caution regarding the implications of deploying humanoid robots in military contexts. Some analysts argue that such technology might inadvertently increase the likelihood of military action by diminishing the perceived risks and consequences associated with conflict.
