David Kennedy, a promising fighter from Gorey, has stirred excitement regarding a potential boxing event in Wexford later this year. Following his recent victory in Donegal, the athlete spoke to Irish-Boxing.com about “whispers” he has heard concerning a possible fight card in his home county.

When asked directly about the event, Kennedy expressed enthusiasm. “There’s going to be a show in Wexford late summer. Now look at — it’s whispers. So keep the fingers crossed,” he stated. This revelation has resonated with local fans and fellow fighters, including Wexford professionals Dean Walsh and Dean Furlong, both of whom could benefit from the hometown spotlight.

The prospect of a local event holds significant meaning for Kennedy. He highlighted the potential atmosphere, saying, “It’d be unbelievable. For me and Dean Walsh and Dean Furlong… the crowd alone for it would be unbelievable.” His supporters have already demonstrated their commitment. Kennedy noted that fans traveled five hours to Donegal to cheer him on during his return to the ring after a ten-month hiatus.

Reflecting on the support he receives, Kennedy stated, “It’s very good. Very grateful. Look at it, it’s just a great town. I’m from Gorey, come to Wexford, Wexford all over — we follow, we see a person doing well, we get behind them.”

Kennedy’s recent win marked an important comeback, and he acknowledged the energy he had built up during his time away from boxing. “I probably took a shot or two,” he admitted. “But look at it — I was out of the ring for 10 months. I was eager to get going again. Maybe a little bit too eager at times. I stuck behind the jab, listened to the corner. We came through fine — on to the next one.”

The light heavyweight’s opponent in Donegal proved to be resilient, absorbing significant punishment throughout the bout. Kennedy remarked on his opponent’s toughness, noting, “He was unbelievably tough,” when asked if he had considered letting the fighter off the hook at times.

Kennedy’s confidence in his abilities is evident, as he stated, “I believe in myself. I believe I can do what the coaches believe. You see what you do in the gym. So we just go in and never mind about him. We do our own.”

As anticipation builds for a potential Wexford boxing event, fans and local fighters alike are eager to see what the summer holds for David Kennedy and his colleagues in the sport.
