Denise O’Sullivan Joins Liverpool with Record €350,000 Transfer
Denise O’Sullivan has made headlines with her transfer from North Carolina Courage to Liverpool, securing a club-record fee of €350,000. This move marks a significant chapter in her career, as the 31-year-old Cork native seeks new challenges closer to home. O’Sullivan made an immediate impact for Liverpool by scoring just six minutes into her debut during the FA Cup victory over London Bees.
After nine seasons with the Courage, where she served as captain for the last two years, O’Sullivan’s career has spanned multiple countries. Since leaving Ireland in 2013, she has played in Scotland with Glasgow City, in the United States with Houston Dash, and had loan spells in Australia with Canberra United and Western Sydney Wanderers. Her tenure with the Courage stands out, as she made a record 186 appearances and collected seven major honours.
Liverpool currently faces a challenging season, sitting at the bottom of the Women’s Super League (WSL) with just four points from their first 12 matches. The primary objective for the team is to avoid relegation. Reflecting on her departure, Ceri Bowley, Chief Soccer Officer at North Carolina Courage, praised O’Sullivan’s leadership and contributions, stating, “Denise has been an integral part of this club since the beginning. She will be missed, but we understand her desire to be closer to home.”
O’Sullivan expressed her pride in joining Liverpool, stating, “It’s a very proud moment for myself and also for my family.” As the second most capped female international for the Republic of Ireland with 128 appearances, she emphasized the importance of being closer to her family, particularly to support her mother. “They have not got to see me play very much over the years as I’ve been a long way from home,” she noted.
Familiar Faces and New Adventures
Upon her arrival at Liverpool, O’Sullivan reunited with familiar faces, including her Irish teammate Leanne Kiernan and former international colleague Niamh Fahey, who now serves as the club’s technical coordinator. Another friendly face is Amber Whiteley, assistant manager for both Liverpool and Ireland.
In other transfer news, Amber Barrett debuted for French club Strasbourg after moving from Standard Liege on her 30th birthday. Barrett has previously played for FC Köln and Turbine Potsdam in Germany, scoring 22 goals in 32 appearances for Strasbourg, which is currently sixth in the French premier league.
Meanwhile, Kelly Brady completed her long-anticipated transfer to Crystal Palace, leaving Athlone after a standout season where she won the player of the year award and finished as the Premier Division’s top scorer. She becomes the fourth Republic of Ireland international at Crystal Palace, joining Ruesha Littlejohn, Abbie Larkin, and Hayley Nolan. The club is presently fifth in WSL2, just three points short of promotion.
Athlone has acted swiftly to fill the void left by Brady, bringing back Dana Scheriff, their top scorer from 2023, after her time playing in Switzerland and the United States. They have also signed Noelle Murray, who was released by Shelbourne after a decade at the club.
As the transfer window closes, these moves signal a period of opportunity and new beginnings for players seeking to make their mark in different leagues and closer to their roots.
