Edogbo Brothers Shine as Rugby Futures Brighten in Ireland
The Edogbo family is experiencing a remarkable rise in rugby, with both Edwin and Sean Edogbo making significant strides in their careers. Edwin, 23, is part of the Ireland squad currently training for the upcoming Six Nations in Portugal, while 21-year-old Sean recently made his senior debut for Munster Rugby. The brothers are drawing attention as promising talents in the sport, with Edwin poised for his first Test cap.
Family support plays a crucial role in their journey. Their mother, Patience, and sister, Favour, celebrated Sean’s outstanding performance at Virgin Media Park, where he was named player of the match against the Dragons. Edwin expressed pride in the moment, stating, “It was amazing to see the family group chat popping off and then going back home and seeing everyone’s smiles across everyone’s faces.”
Both brothers began their rugby journey at Cobh Pirates RFC, where Edwin was initially inspired by Sean’s early involvement in the sport. Edwin recalls, “Sean started rugby first, and after going to one of his games, I thought it would be something that I’d be interested in too. Luckily, it turned out well for us.”
Their household was always filled with sports, from football to tennis and basketball. Edwin noted that although there was no rugby in their family history, their passion for the game quickly grew. “My mother wouldn’t have been the biggest fan of rugby,” he mentioned, reflecting on her initial concerns about the sport’s physical nature. “Now she’s in the full flow of it, she loves every bit of it.”
Edwin’s journey in rugby began at the age of 13, starting as a centre before transitioning to the back row and ultimately settling in the second row. Standing at 6 feet 5 inches and weighing approximately 127 kilograms, he has the physical attributes that make him a formidable player. He remains connected to Cobh Pirates, frequently visiting the clubhouse and gym when back home.
Both brothers aspire to play together for Munster again, having only done so once at the U18.5 level. Edwin humorously remarked that while they were never aggressive towards each other as kids, describing their relationship as “best mates is pushing it now!”
Edwin’s rugby path has not been without challenges. He suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon in 2021, which sidelined him from playing for the Ireland U20s. In 2023, he faced another setback with a rupture of his other Achilles, which halted a promising run with Munster. “The mental side was tough,” he admitted, reflecting on the second injury. “I thought I was in good form before the injury, and having it at such a crucial time was a tough pill to swallow.”
Despite these obstacles, Edwin remains optimistic. He was excited to be part of the Ireland camp, especially under the guidance of his idol, Paul O’Connell. “He was almost the player you wanted to emulate growing up,” Edwin said. “He has a well of knowledge that you can just tap into at any point.”
As he prepares for potential selection against France next Thursday, Edwin acknowledges the intense competition within the squad. “I understand that if the opportunity came around, I would be ready for it,” he stated. He appreciates the learning experience, spending time with experienced players like Joe McCarthy and Tadhg Beirne to enhance his game.
With their skills on display and the support of their family, the Edogbo brothers are not only making their mark in rugby but are also inspiring others in their community. As they look ahead, both Edwin and Sean are determined to achieve their dreams and continue their ascent in the sport, showcasing the bright future of rugby in Ireland.
