Emma Raducanu Faces Scheduling Challenges Ahead of Australian Open
Emma Raducanu is grappling with frustration as she prepares for her first match at the 2024 Australian Open. The British number one faced a challenging schedule, arriving in Melbourne only on January 12 after reaching the quarter-finals at the Hobart International. Raducanu is set to compete against Thai player Mananchaya Sawangkaew on January 14, marking the start of her campaign in a tournament that has already proven difficult.
The scheduling has not worked in Raducanu’s favor, as she will play in the second night session at Margaret Court Arena, following a men’s match that begins at 19:00 local time. This timing raises concerns about a potentially late start for her match. She had intended to practice on the evening of January 13 at 21:00, but the tight timeline has left her feeling unsettled.
“It’s very difficult,” Raducanu stated. “You would love to have more time in the environment, more time practising, but I guess I was pretty much handed the schedule to try and turn it around and make the most out of what is in front of me.”
Raducanu acknowledged the challenge of playing women’s matches after lengthy men’s matches, stating, “To me, it doesn’t really make as much sense.” She noted that this would be a new experience for her, reminiscent of her previous late match during the semi-finals of the US Open.
Despite these challenges, Raducanu remains focused on her performance. The 23-year-old has been dealing with physical issues, particularly a foot injury that has limited her time on the court. Her recent matches have shown signs of her struggle for match sharpness, as she faced Maria Sakkari at the United Cup and experienced both victory and defeat in Hobart against Taylah Preston.
“It’s definitely a lot better,” Raducanu commented about her foot issue. “I’ve been having to manage it for the last few months, but I’m really happy with the progress that I’ve made this year.” She remains optimistic about her condition, stating, “I came out to Australia not knowing how it would go and now I’m in a much better place and just improving day by day.”
Raducanu’s approach reflects her desire to learn and adapt rather than dwell on missed opportunities. She expressed, “I could easily get frustrated about not having the pre-season I wanted. I think it would only frustrate me.” With her experience from last year’s tour, she understands the need to pace herself and work toward her goals progressively.
Looking ahead to her match against Sawangkaew, who is currently ranked 195th but has secured a lower-level title this season, Raducanu recognizes the potential for surprise. “I think it’s a very dangerous opponent, a very dangerous situation to be in,” she remarked, emphasizing the unpredictability that comes with facing a less familiar competitor.
As she prepares to take the court, Raducanu’s resilience shines through. Despite the scheduling issues and physical challenges, she is determined to make the most of her Australian Open experience, focusing on improving her game and gaining valuable match experience. The upcoming match will be a significant moment in her journey as she aims to turn adversity into opportunity on the grand stage of tennis.
