Evan Ferguson Faces Surgery Decision Amid Ongoing Ankle Troubles
Evan Ferguson is facing a critical juncture in his career as he deals with recurring ankle issues, which may require surgery. The young striker returned to his parent club, Brighton & Hove Albion, for an assessment of his ankle, a joint that has plagued him intermittently for the past three years. Ferguson has not played for AS Roma in Serie A since January 10, 2024, when he sustained a back injury during a match against Sassuolo.
Since that incident, Ferguson’s challenges have compounded. He recently suffered another ankle injury in stoppage time during a game against Stuttgart. The injury occurred as he attempted to avoid a collision with a photographer, leading to fears that medical staff at Brighton might recommend surgery. Such a procedure could sideline the 21-year-old striker for the upcoming World Cup play-offs, significantly impacting his chances of contributing to the Irish national team should they qualify for the finals.
As Ferguson navigates this difficult period, former Republic of Ireland international Stephen Carr has urged him to be patient. Carr shared his own experiences with persistent injuries, emphasizing the importance of taking time to recover fully. “You have a fear factor,” Carr explained. “I did my hamstring four times on the bounce. It’s always there in your head.”
Carr compared Ferguson’s situation to that of other athletes, including Michael Owen, who struggled with injuries during his career. He noted that while Ferguson is eager to return to the pitch, rushing back before being completely healed may exacerbate his problems. “He needs to concentrate on getting it 100 percent right,” Carr advised. “It’s not about 90 percent right. I think that may have happened to him because he is hungry to get back playing.”
Ferguson’s journey has been marked by setbacks, but Carr believes that with the right approach, the talented forward can overcome these challenges. “He’s a top talent, a top player. This is the time to sort it when you are young,” Carr added, highlighting the potential that remains for Ferguson if he can resolve his injury issues.
As the situation unfolds, both Brighton and the Irish national team will be watching closely. The decision regarding surgery and Ferguson’s rehabilitation will play a crucial role in his immediate future and could determine his participation in significant upcoming matches.
