Finn Harps manager Kevin McHugh is gearing up for the challenges of the 2026 season, having taken the helm in April 2023. The former player, known for scoring 186 goals in 438 appearances for the club, acknowledges the difficulties ahead but remains optimistic about the upcoming campaign.

McHugh, now 46 years old, expressed his enthusiasm for tackling the complexities of the job during a recent interview. “I like a challenge,” he stated, noting that the team is ready to embark on a demanding season. The geographical layout of the league presents significant travel challenges, particularly as the majority of clubs are located in the southeast and southwest regions. McHugh is well aware of these hurdles, having played and coached in the league for several years.

With the potential for fixtures to pile up—sometimes involving three games in a week—the manager recognizes the impact of injuries and suspensions on team performance. Despite these obstacles, he views them as opportunities for growth. “These are tough times, but again, it’s a challenge,” he remarked, emphasizing his commitment to instilling a winning mentality in his squad.

As the team prepares for the season, Harps has recently reiterated its search for accommodation for players in the Twin Towns area. While this aspect falls outside McHugh’s direct responsibilities, he remains attentive to the needs of the squad. “We have the people involved in this club, and we just get on with things,” he explained, highlighting the support system in place.

Since suffering relegation from the Premier Division in 2022, Finn Harps has struggled to find consistent form in the First Division, finishing ninth, sixth, and eighth in the past three seasons. Last season, under McHugh’s leadership, the team ended in eighth place, falling 12 points short of a playoff spot.

One area McHugh has identified for improvement is the team’s record of 12 draws last season. He noted, “If we turn three or four of those into wins, we’d be way better off.” The focus now is on fostering a competitive spirit, particularly during the final minutes of matches, to push for victories rather than settling for draws.

In preparation for the new season, McHugh opted to start pre-season training earlier than usual. He believes that closing the performance gaps is crucial for success. “We want to target every game. We want to go in and win the game,” he stated, outlining his straightforward approach to each match.

The club is also in the process of appointing a new Head of Academy, a move that is being overseen by Sport Ireland. McHugh mentioned that the appointment could take another month, indicating ongoing developments at the club.

In terms of squad changes, Harps has experienced a degree of turnover this off-season. The departure of Hans Mpongo to Cork City was particularly significant, as he demonstrated strong scoring potential last season. Other notable departures include Gavin Gilmore, Gradi Lomboto, Daniel Cunningham, Mikey Place, and Gavin Hodgins.

Despite these losses, McHugh has been active in the transfer market, securing the signings of Daniel De Lacerda, Bernardo Monteiro, Temiloluwa Ajibola, Perrault Tokam, and Nathan Lumingo. He emphasized the importance of attracting players who are genuinely committed to the club’s vision: “We generally only want players that want to be here.”

The competitive landscape of the league has heightened, with every club investing in improvements. McHugh noted, “Everybody’s got investment. Everybody’s improving. The standards of the league have come up.” He recognizes the need for Finn Harps to keep pace with these developments, as the league continues to evolve.
