Ireland Falls to France 2-1 in World Cup Qualifier Opener
Ireland’s women’s national football team faced a tough opening match in the 2027 World Cup qualifiers, losing 2-1 to France on March 15, 2024. The match took place at Tallaght Stadium, where a record crowd witnessed a spirited performance from the home team. Despite a promising start, which included a goal from Katie McCabe, Ireland was unable to secure a victory as France’s experience proved decisive.
Following the match, Ireland’s head coach Carla Ward expressed a mix of disappointment and pride. “I’m gutted, I feel like someone’s stabbed me in the heart,” she stated during the post-match press conference, underscoring the emotional toll of the loss. Ward emphasized the importance of resilience as her team prepares for their next challenge against the Netherlands on March 18, 2024.
Ward praised her players for their effort, reminding them that they should take pride in their performance. “We can’t feel disappointed. We’ve got to straight away look at the Netherlands and get on with it,” she said. Ward highlighted that Ireland demonstrated their ability to compete with one of the world’s best teams, stating, “When they wake up in the morning, they’ll realize that they’ve competed with one of the best teams in the world.”
Despite the loss, Ireland’s performance was marked by determination. They managed to take 11 shots on target against France, a statistic that Ward noted is a testament to their competitive spirit. “I’d like to know who were the last team to have 11 shots on target against France,” she remarked, adding that the French head coach, Laurent Bonadei, acknowledged Ireland’s fight and control during the game.
In terms of player fitness, Ward raised concerns about Denise O’Sullivan and Katie McCabe, both of whom suffered injuries during the match. O’Sullivan is dealing with a persistent knee issue, while McCabe experienced a “slight niggle” that affected her performance. “She was struggling to accelerate after that, but you wouldn’t have known because Katie’s Katie,” Ward noted, emphasizing McCabe’s determination.
O’Sullivan’s condition will be monitored closely, as her presence is crucial for the team’s composition. “Denise wants to stay on the pitch every minute of every day. She’s so important to us, but we don’t want to risk her,” Ward explained. The coaching staff will assess O’Sullivan’s readiness ahead of the match against the Netherlands.
Looking ahead, Ward acknowledged the challenge of maintaining momentum after such a heart-wrenching defeat. “We’ve showcased that we can compete with France, and we have to take that in,” she said. The team’s focus now shifts to their upcoming encounter against the Netherlands, who were held to a surprising 2-2 draw against Poland on the same day.
As Ireland prepares for this next match, the players are reminded of their strengths and the potential for growth. “If we continue to apply ourselves like that, we’ll get to where we want to go, which is the World Cup,” Ward concluded, reinforcing the belief that, despite the setback, they are capable of achieving their goals. The upcoming match will be a crucial test of Ireland’s resolve and determination as they aim to qualify for back-to-back World Cups.
