La Rochelle Aims to Rebound After Champions Cup Exit Against Clermont
La Rochelle’s assistant coach, Donnacha Ryan, has called on his team to recover from their recent exit from the Champions Cup as they prepare for a crucial French Top 14 match against Clermont this weekend. Following a disappointing defeat to Harlequins, which ended their hopes of securing a third consecutive Champions Cup title, La Rochelle faces a formidable challenge at Clermont’s Stade Marcel-Michelin, a venue where they have not won since the professional era began in 1995.
The upcoming match holds significant importance, as Clermont remains unbeaten at home in the league since September. Ryan emphasized the need for his team to “recharge the batteries” and approach the match with renewed focus. “It’s a massive challenge for us to get over the hump from last week,” Ryan stated in an interview with AFP. The former Ireland international expressed confidence that the players could put their best effort forward, despite the mental and physical toll of the past weeks.
Currently, La Rochelle sits in seventh place in the Top 14 standings, trailing Montpellier, who occupy the final playoff position, by just two points. With 12 rounds of the regular season remaining, consistency will be crucial. The team has experienced a rollercoaster season, alternating between impressive victories over teams like Toulon and Bayonne and a staggering 60-14 loss to league leaders Toulouse.
Maintaining high energy levels is vital, as Ryan noted that the squad is deep into their 12th week of competition. He acknowledged the frustrations players might feel but stressed that they must remain focused on their goals. “Top 14 is a huge part of what we’re about this year as well,” said the 42-year-old coach.
La Rochelle has yet to capture the Top 14 title, a fact that adds urgency to their current campaign. Ryan, who joined the club in 2021 after a successful playing career, spoke about enjoying life in La Rochelle. “It’s a beautiful town. So it’s very cute,” he remarked, reflecting on the positive experience for his family.
One key player to watch this weekend will be Gregory Alldritt, the club captain with 58 Test caps to his name. Alldritt is expected to start against Clermont, marking his return after being surprisingly omitted from France’s Six Nations squad. Ryan praised Alldritt’s leadership skills, highlighting his ability to connect with teammates and provide valuable insights during games. “He’s a very smart guy, pre-game, half-time, after game — he just gets really to the point,” Ryan commented.
In other Top 14 matches this weekend, bottom-placed Montauban will face 13th-placed Perpignan in a relegation battle, while Antoine Dupont’s Toulouse will host Pau in a clash between the league’s top two teams. This weekend’s fixtures will be the last before all of Fabien Galthie’s frontline France squad members are available for their clubs until the conclusion of the Six Nations. The French national team will open their Six Nations campaign on February 5, 2024, facing Ireland at home.
As La Rochelle prepares for their pivotal match, the focus will be on overcoming recent setbacks and striving for a strong finish in the Top 14.
