Limerick Huskies’ Orlaith Woods Reflects on Strong Season Recovery
Limerick Huskies player Orlaith Woods has expressed optimism regarding her team’s recovery after a challenging start to the 2023 season in the Domino’s Women’s Division One league. The Huskies have climbed to the top of the league table, showcasing resilience and determination following an early two-game losing streak.
Turning the Season Around
Woods highlighted the importance of remaining calm and focused during the initial setbacks. “We had a slow start to the season and we had to stay patient early on,” she stated. “We knew we had the talent but the results weren’t coming in those first few games. It’s easy to doubt yourself when you go 0-2, but we just stayed level-headed and trusted the process.”
The team faced significant changes this season, introducing new players and a new coaching staff. Woods noted that once the squad settled into their new system, their performance improved markedly. “Those losses helped us in many ways; they sharpened our focus and brought us together,” Woods added. “We’ve responded well since then.”
As the league progresses, Woods emphasized the competitive nature of the division. “Anyone can beat anyone on their day in this league, it’s that close,” she remarked. With the season still in its early stages, teams are still adjusting to each other, making every match critical. “We have to remind ourselves to stay grounded and take each week as it comes.”
Looking Ahead to the Cup
In addition to an impressive league campaign, the Huskies are gearing up for the Domino’s Division One Cup semi-final next month. Woods believes this cup run is crucial for the club’s morale and demonstrates the potential for success. “The cup run has been huge for the whole club, players, coaches, and fans alike,” she remarked. “It shows the younger players what’s possible through hard work.”
The team is committed to maintaining their momentum through the Christmas period, with Woods noting that their dedication will be vital heading into the semi-finals. “We have a real committed group who will train hard. If we can keep that up, it gives us a great chance in the semi-finals, but we won’t take anything for granted.”
Woods is aware that cup competitions present a unique challenge. “The cup is a different beast. These days don’t come around often, so you have to cherish them while you can,” she stated. “It’ll be about putting our heads down and not changing too much from what’s worked for us so far.” She emphasized the necessity of team contributions and resilience during critical moments.
Woods also commended Patrick O’Regan, the head coach, for his effective leadership. “Patrick has been doing amazing stuff with us, especially considering this is his first year in the league,” she said. “His game plans are clear and concise, and I know he and the coaching staff will prepare us well.”
The camaraderie and culture within the team have flourished under O’Regan’s guidance. “We’ve created such a good culture; it fills us with confidence,” Woods noted. “If we stick to his plan for the season, I expect us to compete strongly.”
As the Limerick Huskies aim for success in both the league and the cup, Woods’ perspective on their journey reflects a shared commitment to improvement and teamwork. The upcoming matches will undoubtedly be pivotal as they strive for their goals this season.
