Munster Rugby hooker Niall Scannell has announced his retirement from professional rugby at the end of the current season, concluding an impressive career that has spanned over 13 years. The 33-year-old player holds the record as Munster’s most-capped hooker, having made 208 appearances for the province and scored 23 tries. Scannell is one of only 17 players to reach the milestone of 200 appearances for Munster Rugby.

Niall Scannell joined the Munster Rugby Academy in 2011 after leading PBC to victory in the Pinergy Munster Schools Senior Cup in 2010. His professional debut came in January 2013 during the British and Irish Cup. His standout performances continued, leading to his debut for the Ireland national team in the 2017 Six Nations, where he started against Italy. Scannell’s contributions to the national squad included participation in the 2019 Rugby World Cup, where he played in four matches.
