Nottingham Forest Secures Historic European Away Win in Utrecht
Nottingham Forest clinched their first European away win in nearly three decades with a 2-1 victory over Utrecht in the Europa League group stage. On January 18, 2024, the team showcased resilience at Stadion Galgenwaard, earning three crucial points that significantly enhance their chances of finishing in the top eight of the league phase.
The match marked a historic moment as it was Forest’s first European away win since October 1995. Back then, the team triumphed against Auxerre in the UEFA Cup, with current first team coach Steve Stone scoring the decisive goal. This time, goals from Arnaud Kalimuendo and Igor Jesus secured the win, offsetting an equaliser from Utrecht’s former Swansea defender, Mike van der Hoorn.
In the opening stages, Forest dominated with eight attempts on goal within the first twenty minutes. Utrecht’s goalkeeper, Vasilis Barkas, made several strong saves, denying efforts from Callum Hudson-Odoi and Douglas Luiz. Despite Forest’s early pressure, they struggled to convert chances, allowing Utrecht to gain confidence.
Utrecht countered with a series of attempts, including a powerful long-range shot from Miguel Rodriguez, which was expertly saved by Forest’s substitute goalkeeper, John Victor. Victor stepped in for Matz Sels, who was sidelined due to a tight groin.
The breakthrough came shortly after halftime. Kalimuendo, who had been largely quiet throughout the match, broke through two Utrecht defenders, capitalizing on a fortunate rebound to fire a shot into the net from a challenging angle. Utrecht’s energy waned in the second half, yet they managed to level the score with just over 15 minutes remaining. Van der Hoorn found himself unmarked at the far post and headed in the equaliser, raising the stakes for Forest.
In a bid to secure the win, Forest manager Sean Dyche introduced Morgan Gibbs-White and Jesus. This tactical change quickly paid dividends. Gibbs-White connected with Hudson-Odoi, who then set up Dan Ndoye. Although Ndoye’s header went directly at Barkas, the ball slipped from the goalkeeper’s grasp, allowing Jesus to pounce on the opportunity and score the decisive goal for Forest.
Reflecting on the match, Forest defender Oleksandr Zinchenko emphasized the importance of securing the three points. “It was a tough game, but we got what we wanted,” he stated. He acknowledged the need for improvement, particularly in maintaining clean sheets. “We had to score and finish this game even earlier,” he added.
Similarly, Hudson-Odoi expressed satisfaction with the team’s response following Utrecht’s equaliser. “The reaction was good, we got the second goal and we saw the game out,” he noted. He also mentioned the team’s ambition to reach the final of the Europa League, highlighting the need for consistent performance in the remaining fixtures.
Looking ahead, Nottingham Forest will conclude their Europa League league phase campaign with two critical matches. They will face Braga in Portugal on January 22, 2024, followed by a home match against Ferencvaros on January 29, 2024. As they strive for a strong finish, the team remains focused on building momentum and securing a successful run in the competition.
