Rory McIlroy Sees New PGA Tour Schedule Luring LIV Golf Stars
Rory McIlroy has expressed optimism about the potential for more players from LIV Golf to return to the PGA Tour, particularly following the recent departures of Brooks Koepka and Patrick Reed. Speaking before his title defense at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, McIlroy emphasized that the dynamics of professional golf are shifting in favor of the PGA Tour.
The world number two noted that the exit of prominent figures like Koepka, a five-time Major champion, signals that LIV Golf may not have fulfilled the expectations of its stars. “I think the pendulum has swung a little more in the PGA Tour’s favour,” McIlroy stated. He highlighted the efforts of new PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp to create a condensed schedule for 2027, which he believes could attract more players considering a switch from LIV Golf.
“It’s evident that the sentiment among players has changed significantly compared to 18 months ago,” he continued. With many players nearing the end of their contracts with LIV, the uncertainty surrounding their financial prospects may prompt them to reconsider their options. “As I’ve said before, everything that’s happened over the last few years has forced the Tour to think about things differently,” McIlroy added.
Reed, who has opted not to renew his contract with LIV, is focusing on improving his status on the PGA Tour through the DP World Tour. McIlroy remarked, “I think Brooks coming back is a big deal, and Patrick earning his way back through really good play over on the DP World Tour is great for him.” He believes that these developments strengthen the PGA Tour.
As he prepares for the upcoming tournament, McIlroy has reverted to the equipment that previously brought him success, including the ball and blade irons that helped him achieve a career Grand Slam. “I had a strong finish to the season last year and played well in the Middle East. I experimented with various setups, but now I’m back to the trusty irons I’ve used throughout my career,” he said.
In addition to equipment changes, McIlroy addressed the ongoing debate regarding the classification of The Players Championship as a Major. A recent advertising campaign for the event, featuring the tagline “this is Major,” has sparked discussion among analysts. Brandel Chamblee, a former Tour winner, claimed that The Players stands above the four traditional Majors due to its competitive field.
McIlroy, while acknowledging the prestige of The Players, remains a traditionalist on the subject. “I’d love to have seven majors instead of five, but I think The Players is one of the best golf tournaments in the world,” he said. He underscored the importance of The Players maintaining its unique identity, stating, “I don’t think it being classified as a Major or not makes it any more or less significant.”
The golfer also touched on the atmosphere at previous Ryder Cups, particularly the unsportsmanlike behavior directed at European players during the last event at Bethpage. McIlroy emphasized the need for a respectful environment at the upcoming Ryder Cup at Adare Manor in 2025. “It’s not the way the Ryder Cup should be played,” he remarked. “We’ll do everything we can to ensure that the game and the matches are played in the right spirit.”
With the PGA Tour’s evolving landscape and upcoming tournaments, McIlroy remains committed to enhancing the status of professional golf while maintaining its traditions. The anticipation surrounding his performance at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am only adds to the excitement in the world of golf.
