Second Allegation Against Munster Boxing Coach Sparks Investigation

A second woman has come forward with allegations of sexual misconduct against a boxing coach in Munster, who had previously been suspended earlier this year. This latest allegation, reported to Gardaí in March 2023, follows an earlier incident involving a young female athlete and has triggered a formal investigation by the Irish Athletic Boxing Association (IABA).

According to reports, the alleged misconduct took place several years ago and did not occur at the boxing club where the coach has been affiliated for many years. Gardaí confirmed that they are actively investigating the incident but stated, “As this is an ongoing investigation, this office is not in a position to provide further information at this time.”

The first allegation prompted the IABA to investigate after a formal complaint was lodged against the coach. The governing body announced that it had suspended him while the investigation was underway, emphasizing its commitment to safeguarding protocols.

In a statement earlier this year, the IABA said it “cannot comment on any individual matters. As a matter of course, the IABA operates a robust safeguarding protocol which, in instances where complaints are made, includes investigation, standing down of individuals if applicable, and referral to Tusla and/or Gardaí, if applicable.”

The new allegation has emerged as boxing officials confirm that another woman has reported misconduct involving the same coach. This development underscores the seriousness of the accusations facing him.

The coach has denied the allegations and remains suspended from his duties. Tusla, the agency responsible for child and family services in Ireland, is also involved in the investigation related to the young athlete. However, it has stated that it cannot comment on individual cases.
