Sligo Rovers have officially announced the loan signing of Guinean forward Mai Traore from League Two club Notts County. The 26-year-old striker joins the team on a six-month loan, adding valuable experience and skill to the squad as they aim for success in the current season.

Traore brings a wealth of European experience to the Showgrounds, having previously played in countries such as Sweden, Norway, and Belgium before moving to England in February 2023. His previous encounters with Sligo Rovers include a notable performance while playing for Viking Stavanger in the Europa Conference League in 2022, where he scored in the first leg in Norway and featured in the second leg held in Sligo.

Rovers manager John Russell expressed his enthusiasm for the new addition, stating, “We wanted to bring in a centre forward who has pace and is direct in transitions, and Mai matched those characteristics.” He highlighted Traore’s proven track record at a high level and noted their prior encounter with him, emphasizing, “We’ve seen just what he can do and how he can punish teams.”

Traore has previously enjoyed success in his career, including a stint with Vasalunds in Sweden, and has also played for clubs like OH Leuven and Fredrikstad, where he won the Norwegian Cup. Russell is optimistic that Traore’s excellent movement in the box will complement the attacking talent within the Rovers’ roster, allowing the team to create ample goal-scoring opportunities.

In a statement reflecting his excitement about joining Sligo Rovers, Traore remarked, “Rovers feels like the right club for me at the moment. I already knew the club from playing against them in Europe, which gave me a good understanding of the environment.” He recalled his experience at the Showgrounds, saying, “It was incredible to see the Showgrounds sold out, the noise was fantastic. I want to play in front of such an atmosphere and I cannot wait to make my debut.”

Traore acknowledged the challenges ahead in the league, stating, “It’s a tough, physical league. I expect intensity, but that will help me grow as a player.” He emphasized his eagerness to contribute to the team, aiming to “attack space, combine with teammates, and finish chances.” His ambition is clear: to make a significant impact during his time with Sligo Rovers.

As the team prepares for upcoming matches, Traore’s arrival injects fresh energy and talent into the squad, with fans looking forward to the potential contributions he will make on the pitch.
