Tottenham Engages Liverpool in Talks for Andy Robertson’s Transfer
Tottenham Hotspur has initiated discussions with Liverpool FC regarding the potential acquisition of Scotland captain Andy Robertson. The 31-year-old defender has made 363 appearances for Liverpool since joining from Hull City in 2017. However, this season, he has seen his starting position challenged by new signing Milos Kerkez and is now entering the final six months of his contract at Anfield.
Robertson, who serves as Liverpool’s vice-captain, confirmed earlier this month that negotiations for a new contract were ongoing. Nevertheless, Tottenham has begun preliminary talks with Liverpool, as reported by the Press Association (PA). The prospect of Robertson moving from Merseyside to London comes after Atletico Madrid expressed interest in signing him last summer, a move he ultimately declined.
Tottenham’s recent struggles under head coach Thomas Frank have highlighted the need for reinforcement in the left-back position. First-choice left-back Destiny Udogie has faced injury issues, paving the way for Robertson to potentially secure more consistent playing time in a new environment.
In a recent statement, Robertson addressed his future, saying, “It’s a difficult question to answer. I’ve got five months left and we need to see the option to stay or if there are options to go. I need to see what myself and my family want moving forward.”
Tottenham’s interest in Robertson follows the completion of the transfer of Souza, a 19-year-old left-back from Santos, for €15 million (approximately £13 million). Frank described Souza as a player suitable for both immediate impact and long-term development.
Despite utilizing Djed Spence frequently at left-back, he is primarily a right-back, and recent performances have led to veteran defender Ben Davies receiving more playing time. Udogie, who has played 82 matches for Tottenham, recently returned from a seven-week injury layoff due to a hamstring strain.
Frank’s focus now shifts to securing vital points in the upcoming match against Burnley, following a challenging spell. The coach’s tenure appeared under threat after fans called for his dismissal during a 2-1 defeat to West Ham United last Saturday, which extended Tottenham’s poor run of form. However, a convincing 2-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund has rejuvenated the team’s morale ahead of the weekend clash.
Reflecting on the recent win, Frank emphasized the importance of consistency, stating, “Of course it was a big win for all of us. It was a much-needed performance and win. Now it’s up to us to build on it, to keep adding layers and keeping the result consistent and also adding even more to the performances. The last eight games there’s much more consistency. There’s much more in those performances that could have given us much more than we got so far, but we need to keep it up with another top performance against Burnley.”
As Tottenham navigates a critical phase in their season, the potential signing of Robertson could represent a significant shift in their defensive strategy, providing the team with both experience and talent as they aim for improved league standings.
