Tyrone’s Darragh Canavan Set to Miss Month of League Action
Tyrone forward Darragh Canavan will miss a month of the Division 2 league season as he prepares for a trip to Australia. This announcement was made by Tyrone manager Malachy O’Rourke following the team’s victory against Cavan, where Canavan notably scored nine points. He is expected to play in the upcoming league match against Louth before his departure.
Canavan’s father, Peter Canavan, confirmed the travel plans during an appearance on RTÉ’s Allianz League Sunday. “It’s news to me,” he said with a laugh when asked about his son’s upcoming trip. “Malachy made it clear that he’s heading to Australia. He’s going for a month. It’s been a longstanding arrangement.” He added that Darragh will be available for the next league game but will miss several matches as a result of his travels.
The absence of Canavan is expected to have a significant impact on Tyrone’s campaign for promotion to the top tier. Former Mayo forward Cora Staunton, who also appeared on the panel, expressed concern about the team’s prospects. “What they’re missing in terms of Ruairí (Canavan) being injured, Darren McCurry being out. It really does put a huge dent in their promotion chances,” she remarked.
The league continues to be competitive, and Tyrone will need to adjust quickly to Canavan’s departure. The team is currently strategizing how to fill the gap left by his absence as they aim for success in the remaining fixtures.
In a related development, Raymond Galligan has joined the backroom team of the Galway footballers under manager Pádraic Joyce. He shared insights about his new role, indicating that his contributions have been focused on workshops with the group. “It’s very minimal what I’m adding to the set-up. I’ve just been out a couple of times over the last few weeks, trying to add a small bit of value,” Galligan said. He expressed optimism regarding the team’s potential for a successful summer, highlighting the talent within the squad.
As Tyrone prepares for their next challenge, the focus will be on maintaining momentum despite the loss of key players. With the Ulster Championship on the horizon, Canavan’s return will be eagerly anticipated by both fans and teammates.
