British Couple Sentenced to 10 Years in Iran for Espionage
A British couple, Lindsay and Craig Foreman, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison by Iranian authorities for espionage. The couple, both in their 50s, has been detained in Iran since January 2025 while traveling on an around-the-world motorcycle journey. Their family announced the sentencing, which has prompted a swift condemnation from the UK government.
The Foremans were arrested in Kerman, located in central Iran. They have consistently denied allegations of spying, claiming they entered the country as tourists. Their son, Joe Bennett, expressed shock upon learning the news, stating, “There’s a big array of emotions that came through, which were overwhelming.”
The couple’s sentencing follows a court appearance last October that lasted only three hours and did not allow for a defense. Bennett emphasized that no evidence has been presented to support the espionage charges against his parents. He described the situation as deeply frustrating and has called for more vigorous action from the UK government.
British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper criticized the sentences as “completely appalling and totally unjustifiable.” She assured that the UK government would pursue the matter relentlessly until the couple is safely returned home. “In the meantime, their welfare is our priority,” Cooper stated, confirming ongoing consular assistance for the couple and their family.
According to relatives, Lindsay Foreman is currently imprisoned in the women’s section of Evin Prison in Tehran, while Craig is held in the political wing. This facility has faced international criticism for its harsh conditions and treatment of prisoners. In a BBC radio interview conducted prior to the sentencing news, Lindsay described her detention as a “rollercoaster,” expressing her and her husband’s desperation in their situation.
She mentioned the limited options available to them, stating, “We have so few tools at our disposal. All we can do is write letters and go on hunger strike.” Lindsay acknowledged her awareness of the risks involved in travelling to Iran against UK government travel advice.
Bennett, who has dedicated himself to advocating for his parents, noted the emotional toll of the situation. He remarked on the UK government’s previous hesitance to act until the couple was sentenced and expressed hope that Cooper’s comments would lead to more decisive measures. “The fight is only just begun now because they’ve been sentenced,” he said.
The family has sought guidance from previous detainees in Iran, including Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, who was released in 2022 after six years in custody following a debt dispute between London and Tehran. Bennett reflected on the uncertainty surrounding his parents’ release, stating, “When will they be released? I don’t know. That is a very hard one to predict.”
As Bennett continues to advocate for his parents, he also grapples with the emotional burden of their imprisonment. “It’s really knocked me for six, being thrust into a role that, you know, you didn’t really expect,” he shared. The inability to physically support his mother has been particularly challenging for him.
The situation highlights the broader context of Western nationals detained in Iran, with critics accusing Tehran of employing “hostage diplomacy” to extract concessions from Western governments. The sentencing coincides with rising tensions over Iran’s nuclear program and military posturing from the United States, underscoring the complex geopolitical landscape that surrounds this case.
