Buncrana Man Escapes Jail Time After Domestic Assault
A man from Buncrana, Eamon Grant, has been sentenced to one month in prison, suspended for six months, after pleading guilty to assaulting his female partner and causing criminal damage. The incident occurred on July 8, 2025, when Grant kicked in the front door of their home at The Meadows before attacking his partner.
During the proceedings at Buncrana District Court, Judge Emile Daly described the incident as a “frightening situation for the injured party.” He warned the 36-year-old defendant that any further adverse attention from law enforcement could result in immediate imprisonment.
Garda Sergeant Conor Mulkerns presented the details of the case, explaining that police were called to respond to a domestic disturbance. Upon arrival, they found the front door had been forcibly removed from its hinges. The victim reported that Grant had assaulted her, inflicting injuries to her legs, arm, and chest.
Grant, who was found to be highly intoxicated, was arrested and taken to Buncrana Garda Station for questioning. The court learned that he has a history of public order offences dating back to 2007. No victim impact statement was submitted, but evidence of minor injuries, including bruising and pain in her finger and wrist, was presented, along with photographs of the damaged door.
In defending Grant, solicitor Frank Dorrian highlighted his client’s struggles with alcohol addiction. Dorrian noted that Grant deeply regrets his actions and is working to confront his issues. The court was informed that Grant and the injured party have been in a long-term relationship for 20 years and share four children.
Dorrian explained that on the night of the incident, Grant returned home inebriated and was refused entry by his partner, which led him to kick in the door out of frustration. Following the violent confrontation, Grant realized that such behavior was unacceptable and expressed remorse for his actions.
Judge Daly acknowledged the severity of the situation, stating, “I have no doubt that this was a frightening situation for the injured party, who at nighttime had her front door broken into.” He expressed concern regarding Grant’s alcohol dependency and the potential for future incidents if he does not seek help.
The judge imposed a suspended sentence on the condition that Grant remains sober and does not attract any attention from law enforcement in the next six months. Grant’s future, according to the judge, hinges on his commitment to addressing his alcohol consumption and improving his behavior.
Following the incident, repairs to the door were completed the next day, but the emotional impact on the victim remains significant. Judge Daly’s ruling reflects both the seriousness of domestic violence and the potential for rehabilitation if the defendant is willing to confront his challenges.
