A primary school in Co. Roscommon is mourning the loss of Áine Gallagher, a beloved teacher who passed away on October 25, 2023, following a courageous battle with illness. Her death has prompted an outpouring of grief from the community, reflecting the deep impact she had on her students and colleagues.

Áine passed peacefully, surrounded by her devoted husband, Edmund Betagh, and her family at The Mayo Hospice. According to her death notice, she faced her long illness “with courage, determination, and dignity.” The notice highlights the extensive network of family and friends who will miss her dearly, including her parents, Tommy and Kathleen Gallagher, her siblings, and numerous relatives.

Diagnosed with breast cancer in October 2016 at the age of 31, Áine’s journey began when she experienced fatigue during a wedding. Subsequent symptoms, including visual migraines and chest pains, led her to seek medical help. After a series of tests, she received the devastating news that the cancer had spread to her liver and lungs. Despite her challenges, Áine remained a dedicated educator at Tarmon National School, where she specialized in special education.

In a heartfelt message shared on social media, the school expressed its sorrow over her passing. “Áine was a dedicated, kind, and caring member of our school community,” the statement read. “She brought warmth, patience, and positivity to her work every day.” The school emphasized that her commitment to nurturing the children in her care would leave a lasting legacy.

To honor Áine’s memory, Tarmon National School has established a memorial in the school hallway, inviting students to share their favorite memories of her. A message at the memorial expresses gratitude for the “kindness, care, and learning” she provided, encapsulating the affection and respect she garnered during her career.

Parents of Áine’s students have also shared their condolences. One parent conveyed their sorrow, stating, “We have such lovely memories of Ms. Gallagher teaching our children. She cared so much about all of the pupils, and you could feel it the moment you walked into her classroom.” Another parent described her as “a lady in every sense and a great teacher.”

Áine will lie in repose at Hiney’s Funeral Home in Crossmolina on October 29, 2023, from 15:30 to 18:30. This will be followed by prayers and her reception into St. Tiernan’s Church, where a Mass of the Resurrection will take place at 12:00 on October 30, 2023, with burial to follow at Crossmolina Cemetery.

The loss of Áine Gallagher has deeply affected not only her family and friends but also the broader community, which has come together to honor a life dedicated to teaching and nurturing the next generation. Her legacy will undoubtedly continue to resonate within the hearts of those she touched.
