Donegal Landowners Urged to Apply for Biodiversity Initiative NOW
URGENT UPDATE: Starting today, Donegal landowners have a vital opportunity to enhance biodiversity on their properties. Applications for The Hare’s Corner, an innovative biodiversity initiative, will open from January 1 to January 18, 2024. This program, coordinated by Burrenbeo Trust in partnership with Donegal County Council, offers essential support and resources to create wildlife-friendly spaces.
Landowners can receive assistance to establish wildlife ponds, native mini-woodlands, heritage mini-orchards, and wildlife hedges—all at no cost. This initiative is designed to combat climate change, promote biodiversity, and improve community wellbeing. Participants will be provided with materials, micro-funding for projects like pond digging, and expert advice to ensure successful implementation.
According to Lee Worrel, Hare’s Corner Coordinator at Burrenbeo Trust, “Landowners can apply for one or more biodiversity actions with no cost and minimal hassle. All we ask in return is their commitment to act as ‘stewards’ of their own special Hare’s Corner.” This collaboration aims to foster a deeper connection between landowners and nature.
Applications are open to farmers, schools, and community groups, but places are limited. Priority will be given to educational institutions and community organizations. Note that farmers currently involved in the ACRES or NPWS Farm Plan Scheme are ineligible to participate.
This rollout in Donegal is funded by the National Parks and Wildlife Service through the Local Biodiversity Action Fund. The initiative marks a significant stride toward creating sustainable, wildlife-rich environments across the region.
