Drogheda United Addresses Controversy Over Co-Chairperson’s Comments
Drogheda United has responded to the backlash surrounding comments made by co-chairperson Joanna Byrne regarding Israel, which the club claims resulted in “open criticism” of both the UEFA and the FAI. The statement from the club follows Byrne’s assertion that she was asked to resign on Monday, a claim that has sparked significant discussion within the football community.
Byrne, who is also a Sinn Féin TD for Co Louth, stated that her call for the FAI to boycott the UEFA Nations League fixtures against Israel in September and October stemmed from her personal political beliefs. Shortly after her statement, it became clear that a portion of the local football community, including fans of Drogheda United, were supportive of her stance. Despite the controversy, Byrne has refused to relinquish her position on the board, and the club confirmed there would be no immediate changes to its board structure.
In their statement, Drogheda United clarified that concerns raised by fellow directors were not tied to any specific political or moral views. The club emphasized that the issues stemmed from Byrne’s public criticism of UEFA and the FAI, organizations to which Drogheda United is accountable. The statement read, “To be clear, the substance of Ms Byrne’s views has never been attacked by the Club or Trivela Group.”
The ongoing dispute raises questions about the relationship between personal beliefs and professional responsibilities within sports organizations. As fans prepare for Friday’s match at Oriel Park, there have been discussions of potential protests against the board, highlighting the divide in opinions among supporters.
Byrne, who made history in April 2024 as the first female chairperson of a Premier League of Ireland club, expressed her hurt in a public statement. “It is profoundly hurtful that expressing a moral view—one shared by the majority of Irish football fans—has led to this approach,” she stated. “I stand over those comments. They were made from a deeply held belief in equality, human rights, and the power of sport to take principled positions—as it has done many times in history.”
While both parties have reiterated their positions, it remains uncertain how this situation will unfold. The club’s commitment to maintaining neutrality in accordance with the FIFA Code of Ethics and the UEFA Statutes will likely be at the forefront of discussions in the coming days. As the football community observes, the potential for a resolution between Drogheda United and Joanna Byrne appears contingent on finding common ground amidst differing views.
