Dublin Zoo Faces Backlash Over ‘Drag Queen’ Mother’s Day Ad
URGENT UPDATE: Dublin Zoo is facing significant backlash over its newly launched Mother’s Day advertising campaign featuring Irish social media star James Patrice. The zoo announced its ‘mams go free’ offer, allowing one complimentary adult ticket with every full-paying adult or child ticket purchased online for Mother’s Day on March 19, 2023.
This promotion is part of the zoo’s broader ‘All-Things-Irish Takeover’, which runs from March 14 to 17 and celebrates Irish culture with humor and community spirit. However, the campaign has sparked controversy, leading to public criticism from politicians and members of the community who took issue with the portrayal of Patrice’s character, the ‘Malahide Mammy’.
Dublin Zoo expressed disappointment over the negative discourse, emphasizing that Patrice was selected as the ambassador due to his strong connection with Irish audiences and his light-hearted celebration of Irish culture. In a statement, a spokesperson for the zoo said, “James appears in character as ‘Malahide Woman’, a long-established comedic persona rooted in humour and fun.”
Despite the mostly positive reception, notable figures including Independent TD Ken O’Flynn and Senator Sharon Keogan have publicly criticized the campaign, arguing it is inappropriate. The zoo has responded by asserting that the Mother’s Day offer is just one part of a larger celebration of Irish culture and community.
The backlash has prompted Dublin Zoo to clarify its intentions. They stated, “While we are disappointed that some commentary on social media has taken elements of the campaign out of context, Dublin Zoo remains proud to be a place that welcomes people from all backgrounds and communities every day.”
As the controversy unfolds, Dublin Zoo is committed to proceeding with its celebration of Irish culture. The zoo invites families to participate in the upcoming events and offers an opportunity for all to enjoy the festivities.
With Mother’s Day just around the corner, the zoo’s ‘All Things Irish Takeover’ aims to bring joy and community spirit to visitors, despite the criticisms. The impact of this campaign and the public response is expected to evolve in the coming days. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
