Farmers Deploy Drones to Combat Surge in Agricultural Theft

UPDATE: Farmers are urgently turning to drones and GPS technology to combat a dramatic rise in agricultural theft across rural communities. A recent report by RTÉ Prime Time highlights alarming trends, showing that organized crime is increasingly targeting farmers, leaving them with substantial financial losses.

As farmers face escalating threats, many are investing in drone surveillance and GPS tracking systems to protect their livestock and machinery. Reports indicate that stolen equipment is often traced back to locations in Eastern Europe, where it is quickly resold. With the lambing season underway, the urgency to act has never been greater.

In Limerick, farmer Jimmy O’Donnell shared alarming statistics, stating that nearly every dairy farmer in his area has experienced theft in the past year. He recounted personal losses of a drill, chainsaw, and even €200 worth of diesel. “It’s easier to send a drone down the fields if we see people on the land than it is to go and challenge them,” O’Donnell explained. “Confronting trespassers can be a frightening experience.”

Drones have proven to be a game-changer. O’Donnell described how his tiny drone can travel a kilometer away, capturing video footage of suspicious activity. “They know it’s up there, and some will try to throw sticks at it. It’s a great deterrent,” he said. He emphasized the emotional toll of theft, saying, “If you steal stock, you’re not just stealing an animal. You’re stealing months or years of hard work.”

CCTV footage obtained by Prime Time shows thieves brazenly stealing quad bikes and heavier machinery under the cover of darkness. Companies specializing in tracking stolen vehicles report that some Irish farm machinery ends up in countries like Belarus, Poland, and Lithuania, where it may eventually be sold in Russia. This trend has intensified following sanctions on Russian imports since the invasion of Ukraine in 2022, creating a lucrative black market for stolen goods.

Farmers like Aidan Sheerin from Sligo are sounding the alarm for vigilance. Sheerin recently suffered a theft of 14 sheep valued at €2,000 from a locked shed. He believes livestock thefts are severely underreported, as many farmers feel helpless against the growing threat. “What can the guards do?” he questioned, highlighting the ease with which thieves can replace livestock tags.

In the past four years, An Garda Síochána has recorded 324 incidents of livestock theft, with reports rising from 70 incidents in 2024 to 91 incidents last year. The soaring prices of meat are driving this surge in theft, making livestock a prime target.

Superintendent Michael Corbett of An Garda Síochána, who leads efforts against rural crime, emphasized the importance of reporting thefts. “Criminals rely on speed, darkness, and opportunity, and technology can eliminate all three if used properly,” he said. He urged rural residents to report any suspicious activity, stating, “If you don’t report it, we can’t investigate.”
