UPDATE: A delegation from Galway County is currently strengthening ties with Washington County, Wisconsin, in a critical meeting that underscores their 22-year twinning relationship. The meeting, taking place in West Bend, is part of a broader initiative focused on tourism, culture, and economic development, led by Leas-Chathaoirleach Cllr Mary Hoade and Chief Executive Liam Conneally.

This delegation, which also includes Cllrs Michael Regan and Moggie Maher, along with Director of Infrastructure Development Uinsinn Finn, is engaging with local government officials to enhance mutual cooperation. Jeffrey D. Schleif, Chairperson of the Washington County Board, welcomed the delegation with a presentation highlighting the benefits of this ongoing collaboration.

“Our twinning with Washington County has opened doors for Galway in so many ways,” Cllr Hoade stated. “It strengthens tourism links, creates opportunities for economic development, and allows us to share ideas on public policy and community infrastructure.” She emphasized the importance of deepening cultural connections that foster friendships and mutual understanding between the counties.

Liam Conneally expressed gratitude for the warm reception and the productive exchanges. “The meeting offered valuable insights into local democracy in action and comparisons with local authority functions in Ireland,” he noted. The discussions covered pressing issues, including the recent state of emergency following record-breaking rainfall and flooding, housing rezoning proposals, and future plans for the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee campus.

The delegation’s itinerary includes upcoming meetings with government, tourism, cultural, and business leaders in Illinois and Wisconsin. A highlight of their trip is Galway’s participation in the Milwaukee Irish Fest, known as the world’s largest Irish cultural event, attracting over 120,000 visitors annually. This festival provides a platform for promoting Galway as a premier visitor destination.

Additionally, the Galway County Council will attend the Chicago Irish Fest from August 22 to 24. The Chicago agenda features a City Hall briefing on the Green Social Housing strategy, meetings with business networks, tours of urban renewal projects, and an event hosted by the Irish American Heritage Center.

As these developments unfold, the Galway delegation aims to solidify economic opportunities and cultural exchanges, ensuring that the partnerships forged over the years continue to thrive. Stay tuned for more updates on this significant diplomatic engagement!
