Galway Residents Urged to Support 94-Acre Solar Farm Initiative
Residents in Galway are being encouraged to support a proposed 94-acre solar farm and battery energy storage facility. Located in Cregmore, just outside Galway City, the Ballymoneen Solar Farm received planning permission in 2021 and could begin operations later this year. Despite its potential benefits, many locals express concerns regarding the visual impact on the landscape.
During a recent appearance on The Claire Byrne Show, Brendan Cronin, Chair of Abbeyknockmoy and Monivea Against Solar Sprawl, voiced the community’s apprehensions. He emphasized that the group is “not anti-renewable,” but rather opposed to what they perceive as the imposition of unregulated industrial solar developments near homes, schools, and farms. “We want a clean energy strategy,” he stated, highlighting the lack of safety standards and emergency plans associated with the project.
Cronin also raised safety concerns, referencing a significant battery incident fire in Claregalway approximately 20 minutes from Galway City. “In that fire, there were up to 1,700 people evacuated from the area,” he explained, underscoring the potential risks of battery storage facilities.
Balancing Renewable Energy and Community Concerns
Economist David W Higgins offered a contrasting view during the same program. He believes that the concerns of local residents can be effectively managed and pointed out that the adoption of solar technology is rapidly increasing worldwide. “China’s output of solar panels has allowed them to become much cheaper,” he noted, referencing a cost reduction of about two-thirds in the last decade.
Higgins described solar power as a viable energy option and stressed the importance of finding ways to coexist with such technologies. He argued that the risks associated with renewable energy are considerably lower compared to the dangers linked to fossil fuels. “When we burn fossil fuels, we get an absolute certainty of pollution to the air and the wider environment,” he asserted.
While addressing safety concerns regarding battery technology, Higgins expressed confidence in its evolution. “How likely is a battery fire within the lifetime of any one of these units? I would rate it as being incredibly low; the battery technology is only getting better,” he remarked.
Additionally, Higgins acknowledged the visual impact that solar farms may have and suggested potential solutions. “If a big plant goes in, developers could fund shrubbery and other measures to mitigate the visual impact,” he proposed, comparing solar panels to wind turbines, which often face similar objections.
Environmental Goals and Community Engagement
Ireland is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 42% by 2030. However, experts warn that the country may be on track to miss this target, potentially facing billions in fines from the European Union.
As the debate continues, the community of Galway remains divided on the Ballymoneen Solar Farm. While some residents champion the project for its potential to contribute to renewable energy goals, others remain steadfast in their opposition, citing concerns over safety and environmental impact. The outcome of this initiative could set a precedent for similar projects across Ireland as the nation strives to meet its ambitious environmental objectives.
