Garda Group Threatens ‘Blue Flu’ on St. Patrick’s Day Amid Pay Disputes

URGENT UPDATE: The Garda Representative Association (GRA) has issued a stark warning, threatening to initiate a ‘blue flu’ protest during Ireland’s St. Patrick’s Day celebrations if ongoing pay disputes are not resolved. This announcement comes just days before the festive weekend, putting significant pressure on the government to act immediately.

In an official statement, the GRA indicated that members will not participate in any voluntary overtime from March 16 to March 18, 2025, significantly affecting policing during one of Ireland’s busiest holidays. The group has also hinted at a withdrawal from all activities related to Ireland’s hosting of the EU presidency, which begins in July 2025, if their demands are not met.

The GRA is calling on Minister for Justice Jim O’Callaghan and Minister for Public Expenditure and Public Service Reform Jack Chambers to honor previous pay agreements and address overdue entitlements. GRA President Mark O’Meara emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “It is unfortunate that we as gardaí have to resort to fighting for basic rights and entitlements that have long been promised and been previously agreed.”

The pressure is mounting as the GRA prepares for its annual delegate conference on April 21, 2025. If the government fails to make significant progress on issues related to subsistence and travel allowances, local bargaining, and Consumer Price Index increases, the GRA may consider “all possible further actions” concerning participation in the EU presidency and upcoming events.

GRA General Secretary Ronan Slevin conveyed the frustration among members, asserting that the government’s failure to honor past agreements is unacceptable. “Our members’ frustrations are blatantly obvious, and any planned actions over the coming months will be a clear demonstration of that,” he stated.

In a separate decision, the GRA will be submitting any proposed changes to the subsistence and travel scheme to its full membership for approval via a national ballot. This process will ensure transparency, providing members with a detailed comparison of current rates versus proposed changes.

The stakes are high as the GRA continues to explore every avenue to ensure its members are treated fairly. With the looming specter of protests during a major national holiday, the government faces mounting pressure to resolve these issues quickly.

As St. Patrick’s Day approaches, all eyes will be on the negotiations between the GRA and the government. The outcome will not only impact the celebrations but could also set a precedent for how public service entitlements are managed in the future.
