Kilkenny Community Rallies to Save Historic Pub from Closure
UPDATE: The future of the historic Ranchers Return pub in Coon, North Kilkenny, is at a critical juncture as community members unite to save it from closure. This beloved local hub, also known as the Village Well, has been a cornerstone of community life since the mid-1850s, offering a gathering space for neighbors and a venue for music and storytelling.
After the previous owners announced the pub is up for sale, residents have stepped up to lead an initiative aimed at raising €350,000 to secure its future. With the support of the previous proprietors, parishioners are organizing community meetings to discuss a cooperative bid, focusing on preserving this vital resource.
Phil Shore, a lifelong resident of Coon, emphasizes the pub’s significance: “There’s something different about this place… Without it, I think we’d be lost here.” The community is not just fighting for a pub; they are fighting for a shared space that strengthens bonds and fosters social connections.
Community shares are available for purchase at €2,500 each, with options for families and groups to donate smaller amounts. The financial structure will classify €2,499 as a 0% loan and €1 as a purchased share, ensuring community ownership.
Gerald Flynn, who has lived in Coon for 22 years, adds, “It is the hub of the community for parties, anniversary masses, and so much more. We have a million and one ideas as a committee.” The initiative aims to create an inclusive space for all, where both drinkers and non-drinkers can come together.
Community member Brendan Healy highlights the importance of the pub in combating rural isolation: “It was hard to get people to come out after the pandemic… It’s not about drink, it’s about coming down and having fun.” The efforts of the community are not just about preserving a pub; they are about future-proofing a social center for generations to come.
Local representative Cllr Pat Fitzpatrick praised the initiative, stating, “It’s the hub. Let’s not let it deteriorate. It’s critical we hold on to this resource.” As the community rallies together, the urgency to act grows.
With community support, the Ranchers Return could continue to thrive, remaining a cherished gathering spot in Coon. Residents are encouraged to contribute and share the initiative widely, ensuring that this vital piece of local history doesn’t become just a memory.
Stay tuned for updates as this community-driven campaign unfolds, and consider joining the effort to save the Ranchers Return—an iconic symbol of togetherness and resilience.
