Kilkenny’s TJ Reid Reflects on All-Ireland Disappointment and Future Goals
Kilkenny captain TJ Reid expressed his frustrations following the team’s loss to Tipperary in the 2023 All-Ireland semi-final, emphasizing his commitment to improving the team’s performance in future competitions. Reid acknowledged the emotional toll of the defeat but remains optimistic about Kilkenny’s potential heading into the 2026 season.
Reflecting on the previous year’s semi-final, Reid admitted he was “p****d off” by the outcome, a sentiment that resonates with many players who invest significant effort into their sport. “You sacrifice an awful lot so you deserve to be p****d off over what happened,” he said. Despite the disappointment, he noted that Tipperary went on to win the All-Ireland Final, underscoring the competitive nature of the championship.
Learning from Past Experiences
Reid indicated that the last three championships have been decided by narrow margins, with every team Kilkenny has faced ultimately progressing to secure the All-Ireland title. “The last three, it’s been fine margins,” he remarked humorously, demonstrating his awareness of the high stakes involved in each match.
The veteran player, who has been integral to Kilkenny’s success over the years, recalled the rarity of such a significant defeat. “Last year, I’m playing a long time now and that’s the first time I’ve witnessed something like that so please god it doesn’t happen again,” he said. His candor reflects the emotional investment players make, as they strive for excellence in a sport with a rich tradition and passionate following.
Reid emphasized the importance of incremental improvement, suggesting that even a modest enhancement of around 5% in the team’s performance could yield significant results. “If we can improve by 5% this year, that’s all we have to do. Find an extra percent,” he stated, reinforcing his focus on continuous development and readiness for future challenges.
Looking Ahead
As Kilkenny prepares for the upcoming season, Reid’s leadership and determination are vital in guiding the team through the competitive landscape of hurling. With new strategies and a commitment to learning from past disappointments, the Noresiders aim to reclaim their place among the elite in Irish hurling.
The insights shared by Reid resonate beyond just the sporting community, highlighting the resilience required to face setbacks and the relentless pursuit of improvement. As Kilkenny looks to build on its legacy, the anticipation of the 2026 season grows, fueled by the hope of past lessons leading to future triumphs.
