Lidl Proposes Major Expansion in Kilkenny with New Supermarket Plans
UPDATE: Lidl Ireland has just announced ambitious plans for a new supermarket on Johnswell Road, Kilkenny City. The company has lodged a significant planning application with Kilkenny County Council, aiming to transform the existing site into a state-of-the-art discount foodstore.
The proposed development involves the demolition of the current single-storey foodstore, which spans 1,746 sqm, and the construction of a new facility measuring 2,568 sqm gross floor space. This new store will feature a part-single, part-two storey design with a net retail sales area of 1,742 sqm.
In addition to the new structure, Lidl seeks to revamp the entire site layout. This includes enhanced vehicular and pedestrian access, expanded car parking, and extensive landscaping. Other key upgrades include electric vehicle charging stations, solar panels, and improved waste storage facilities.
The planning application is currently awaiting validation from Kilkenny County Council. A decision is expected by April 23, 2026, although this timeline may extend if additional information is requested by the authorities.
Lidl’s presence in Kilkenny has been notable, with two other outlets currently operational in the city and one in Thomastown. The retailer previously closed its Loughboy location for significant renovations in 2022, highlighting its commitment to expansion and modernization.
This latest proposal reflects Lidl Ireland’s ongoing efforts to enhance shopping experiences while prioritizing sustainability. The company has been at the forefront of the Irish grocery market since entering in 2000 and is known for its competitive prices and quality, locally-sourced products.
As Lidl continues to grow, it has also expressed interest in opening an outlet in Castlecomer, further indicating its ambition to serve more communities across Ireland.
Residents and Lidl customers in Kilkenny are encouraged to stay tuned for updates on the planning process, as this development could significantly impact local shopping dynamics and employment opportunities in the area.
This news is a pivotal moment for Kilkenny City as Lidl strives to combine value with sustainability, underscoring its role as a socially responsible brand in an increasingly competitive landscape.
