Limerick Rugby Club Mourns Teen Jack Freeney’s Tragic Death
URGENT UPDATE: The south Limerick rugby community is in mourning following the tragic passing of Jack Freeney, a beloved teen and promising athlete, in the early hours of Wednesday morning. Bruff RFC expressed their heartbreak on social media, stating, “a hole in our hearts that will never be filled.”
Jack, who was diagnosed with melanoma in 2024, bravely fought his illness, undergoing brain surgery the same year. The club highlighted his remarkable strength and courage, saying, “From the moment of his diagnosis, Jack chose to fight his battles head-on with remarkable grace and confidence.” His spirit and resilience inspired many in the community.
Living just across the road from Bruff RFC in Kilballyowen, Jack was destined to be a part of the club. His talent shone through at a young age, as he spent countless hours honing his skills with his father, Paddy Freeney, and friends. Over the years, he made 84 appearances for the club, contributing to significant victories, including the James Keating tournament in 2017 and the North Munster Plate last year.
“He could nail a kick from anywhere in the opposition half,” the club remarked, reflecting on the profound impact Jack had on his teammates and the sport. The entire community has rallied around Jack’s story over the past 18 months, with many touched by his journey.
“Jack is an inspiration to every single one of us,” Bruff RFC noted. “He has shown us all the strength of not only himself and the Freeney family but of our community as a whole.” The club emphasized the importance of unity during challenging times, recalling a memorable visit from Craig Casey, who gifted Jack an Irish jersey that day.
In an emotional gesture, former Ireland and Munster player Peter O’Mahony also visited Jack in Cork University Hospital, presenting him with a jersey, further illustrating the profound connections Jack formed within the sport.
The Freeney family is in the thoughts and prayers of the Bruff RFC community during this devastating period. “Jack, your spirit, your laughter, and the way you lifted everyone around you will be sorely missed,” the tribute concluded. “There will forever be a hole in our hearts that will never be filled, but know that your memory will continue to live on in everything we do.”
Funeral arrangements will follow, as the rugby community prepares to honor Jack’s legacy. May he rest in peace.
