Limerick TD Urges Government to Reinstate Energy Credits Now

URGENT UPDATE: Limerick Sinn Féin TD Maurice Quinlivan is calling on the government to reverse its controversial decision to withdraw energy credits, which are critically impacting individuals with disabilities. This plea follows a meeting with representatives from several disability rights organizations, including the Irish Wheelchair Association, Access for All, Rehab, and the Disability Federation of Ireland.

The urgency of Quinlivan’s message comes as disability advocates protested outside Leinster House today, expressing outrage over the financial strain inflicted by Budget 2026. Many individuals living with disabilities could see their annual expenses rise by up to €1,400 due to the withdrawal of energy credits. “Those I spoke with are terrified of heating their homes this winter,” Quinlivan stated. “The increase in the Disability Allowance has not kept pace with inflation, leaving many worried about affording their utility bills.”

Quinlivan highlighted alarming statistics that reveal households with disabled members require an additional 52-59 percent in disposable income to match the living standards of those without disabilities. For families with severe limitations, this figure can rise to a staggering 93 percent of their disposable income.

As nearly 300,000 households find themselves in energy arrears, the potential fallout from the budget cuts is concerning. “There is a real risk that this budget will push more individuals living with disabilities into poverty,” Quinlivan warned. Recent figures indicate that one in four people with disabilities were at risk of poverty in 2024.

Quinlivan’s urgent appeal calls for the immediate introduction of an energy credit to ensure that all individuals can afford heating during the winter months. The situation is developing rapidly, and the need for action is more pressing than ever.
