Man Charged with Murder Claims Partner Stabbed Herself in Cork
BREAKING: A man has been charged with the murder of his partner, found dead in a burning apartment in Cork. The trial reveals that Adam Corcoran, 31, claims that Daena Walsh, 27, stabbed herself in the stomach, according to a 999 call he made.
The shocking details emerged during the opening day of the trial at the Central Criminal Court in Cork, as the prosecution outlined the harrowing circumstances surrounding Walsh’s death on 2 August 2024. According to officials, Walsh sustained a total of 25 sharp force injuries, including 11 stab wounds and 14 incised wounds.
Corcoran, who has denied the charges, reported that after a visit to their apartment at approximately 3 PM, he left just an hour later and called emergency services. When responders arrived, they found Walsh unresponsive on the floor, with the apartment in disarray and aerosol cans showing signs of an imminent fire.
Prosecutor Donal O’Sullivan, SC, emphasized that the evidence would indicate Walsh was already deceased when the fire started, stating succinctly, “essentially she died from being stabbed to death.” The jury will hear from a pathologist who confirmed that the deepest stab wound measured 11.5 cm and penetrated her sternum.
During the presentation, O’Sullivan noted that forensic analysis identified blood on two knives discovered in the apartment, matching that of Walsh. Additionally, injuries on her arms suggest she may have defended herself during the attack.
The court will also see a montage of CCTV footage from various locations in Midleton on the day of the incident. This evidence is expected to play a crucial role in the jury’s deliberation.
Walsh, a mother of two originally from County Wicklow, and Corcoran, who grew up in Ballincollig, had reportedly lived together in Midleton for several years. As this case unfolds, it is set to feature over 50 witnesses and is scheduled to conclude by 20 March.
The trial is presided over by Ms. Justice Siobhan Lankford, with the jury comprised of eight men and four women, tasked with determining the truth behind this tragic event. The case will continue tomorrow, with the courtroom eager for further revelations.
