MMA Fighter and Chef Denied Bail After Violent Dublin Assault

Two men, a mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter and a chef, have been denied bail following their court appearance in Dublin. They face charges related to a brutal, unprovoked assault that occurred in the Temple Bar area on February 16, 2024, leaving a man in critical condition at Beaumont Hospital.

The injured man, who was found on Cope Street in the early hours of February 16, suffered severe injuries including multiple facial fractures, a broken arm, and a significant laceration to the back of his head. He was initially treated at St. James’s Hospital but later transferred due to the deterioration of his condition. As of the court hearing, he had shown a minor improvement, having begun to breathe without a ventilator.

Details of the Assault

The defendants, Dominic Smith (36) and Leonel Ricci (28), appeared before Judge Máire Conneely at Dublin District Court, where they were remanded in custody. Smith, who resides in Co Carlow, is an unemployed chef, while Ricci, an Argentinian with no fixed address in Dublin, claims to be a trained MMA professional.

According to Gardaí, the assault unfolded when the victim, after arriving on an e-scooter, attempted to park it at a bike stand. Initial interactions between the victim and Ricci appeared friendly, with a handshake exchanged. However, just two minutes later, the situation escalated dramatically. Gardaí allege that Ricci lunged at the victim, delivering a series of punches that left him unable to defend himself.

It was reported that while Ricci held the victim down, Smith stamped on his face and kicked him multiple times. The severity of the assault was further highlighted by claims that Ricci took the victim’s e-scooter and smashed it onto his face. Witnesses stated that Ricci shouted, “No more drugs,” during the attack, as he reportedly believed the victim was involved in drug dealing.

Legal Proceedings and Future Implications

The Gardaí identified the victim two days after the incident, following the circulation of a photograph highlighting a distinctive tattoo on his arm. The investigation revealed that the defendants had been tracked via CCTV footage walking from Liffey Street to Cope Street.

Detective Gardaí Gráinne Collier and Garda Michael Moore opposed bail due to the violent nature of the crime and the potential flight risk posed by Smith’s previous work abroad in France, England, and Spain. They articulated concerns that he may have the means to flee the jurisdiction.

Defence solicitor Evan Moore argued that Ricci, who came to Ireland in November 2023 with aspirations of becoming a Garda, had his passport seized, which would prevent him from leaving. Another solicitor, Luke O’Higgins, representing Smith, contended that both defendants would adhere to strict bail conditions and noted their lack of serious criminal history.

The charges are under Section 3 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act, which could lead to a sentence of up to ten years if convicted. The judge acknowledged that Gardaí intend to seek approval from the Director of Public Prosecutions for more serious charges as the case develops.

Both defendants are scheduled to appear again in court on February 27, 2024, as the investigation continues into this violent incident that has shocked the Dublin community.
