Neura Robotics and TUM Unveil Largest Physical AI Training Hub in Europe

Neura Robotics, in partnership with the Munich Institute of Robotics and Machine Intelligence (MIRMI) at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), has announced the launch of Europe’s largest training center for Physical AI, known as the TUM RoboGym. This facility will cover an initial area of 2,300 square meters, with plans for future expansion. Situated at the TUM Convergence Center at Munich Airport, it is set to begin operations in mid-2026, where a fleet of humanoid robots will train under real-world conditions. This development marks a significant milestone in enhancing intelligent machine capabilities and fortifying Europe’s technological sovereignty.

Professor Lorenzo Masia, director of the TUM RoboGym and executive director of TUM MIRMI, highlighted the geopolitical relevance of this initiative, stating, “European sovereignty is extremely important in times of geopolitical competition between East and West.” He emphasized that the RoboGym will provide a unique infrastructure for researchers and students to experience and innovate in robotics and AI, thus cultivating a strong core of European expertise as they transition into the workforce.

The collaboration aims to merge cutting-edge robotics technology with top-tier academic research in artificial intelligence. Professor Achim Lilienthal, vice director of MIRMI, remarked on the potential impact of this partnership, indicating that it will significantly accelerate development in the field.

According to David Reger, CEO and founder of Neura Robotics, the focus is shifting from hardware to the availability of high-quality, realistic training data. He stated, “Together with TUM, we are building a RoboGym that gives partners and developers access to real-world training environments through the Neuraverse, enabling cognitive robots to learn safely and scale their capabilities faster.” This initiative signals a strong commitment from Germany and Europe to become leaders in Physical AI technology.

The joint investment in this project is approximately €17 million, with Neura Robotics contributing around €11 million. A significant portion of the data generated within the RoboGym will be integrated into the Neuraverse, which serves as Neura’s central platform for training data. Enhanced data sovereignty will lead to more precise AI models and improved robot capabilities. This initiative aims to foster innovation, safety, and responsible automation while establishing a global standard for Physical AI.

Looking ahead, the RoboGym will also welcome industry partners and start-ups, creating new avenues for commercial and research opportunities. This will serve as a launchpad for the next generation of intelligent humanoid robots, further reinforcing Germany and Europe as pivotal hubs for innovation in this crucial field. The establishment of the TUM RoboGym represents a decisive step toward advancing the capabilities of robotics and AI, ultimately contributing to a more robust technological landscape in Europe.
