URGENT UPDATE: A staggering 5,321 children spent their Christmas in emergency accommodation, according to the latest figures on homelessness in Ireland. Released on December 25, 2023, the report reveals that 16,996 people are currently homeless across the nation—over 31% of whom are children.

Deputy Rory Hearne, Housing Spokesperson for the Social Democrats, condemned the situation as “shameful.” He emphasized that these children opened their Christmas gifts in hotel rooms or substandard housing, a far cry from the stability of a permanent home.

The report also indicates that 2,525 families are homeless, while 7,382 individuals from single households lack a place to call home. The crisis disproportionately affects men, with 6,992 recorded as homeless, compared to 4,683 women. Notably, those aged between 25 and 44 represent over 53% of the homeless population.

Dublin emerges as the epicenter of this crisis, with 8,214 adults living without shelter, while the North-West reports the lowest figure at just 164 adults. Alarmingly, 50% of those without homes are Irish citizens, with 30% originating from outside Europe and the United Kingdom.

Hearne criticized the government for failing to address the root causes of homelessness, highlighting that evictions, unsustainable rents, and a chronic shortage of affordable housing drive this crisis. He condemned the recent comments by Tánaiste Simon Harris, who inaccurately connected rising homelessness levels to immigration, stating that such claims distract from the real issues at hand.

“This government continues to refuse to accept responsibility for this crisis,” Hearne added, calling the current situation a “stain on our society.” He urged immediate action to combat homelessness, emphasizing the need for effective solutions.

As the nation grapples with these alarming statistics, the urgency for government intervention is clear. The plight of these children and families serves as a call to action for policymakers to prioritize housing and support systems that can reverse these troubling trends.

The situation remains fluid, and further updates are anticipated as authorities respond to this escalating crisis. Stay tuned for more developments on this critical issue impacting thousands of lives across Ireland.
