President Connolly to Meet Creeslough Families for Inquiry Push
URGENT UPDATE: President Catherine Connolly will meet with families and survivors of the Creeslough tragedy later this evening. This crucial meeting is set against the backdrop of the ongoing push for a public inquiry into the devastating explosion that occurred in 2022, claiming multiple lives.
While President Connolly’s visit to Co Donegal was primarily focused on official engagements, she proactively reached out to members of the Creeslough community. The gathering will take place at an undisclosed location as families seek answers and justice.
This meeting comes at a critical time as the families of the victims are urging the President to advocate for a public inquiry. They aim to press the government to take action following a lack of clarity on the events surrounding the tragedy. A relative of one of the victims expressed gratitude for the President’s willingness to meet, stating, “We appreciate that she has a very busy schedule. But we just want a few minutes of her time to let her know the living nightmare we are all going through not knowing what happened to our loved ones.”
The emotional weight of this meeting is underscored by the fact that it has been over three and a half years since the explosion, and families are still searching for answers. They are hopeful that President Connolly will listen to their concerns and advocate for a thorough investigation.
Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan has indicated that a criminal investigation must be completed before any public inquiry can be initiated. However, this has not deterred calls for immediate action. Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald, who visited Co Donegal yesterday, has urged the Minister to reconsider his stance and facilitate a public inquiry.
As discussions unfold, the families remain steadfast in their resolve to seek justice. “We will be thankful for anything that she can do for us,” the relative added, reflecting the desperation and hope that permeates the community.
Stay tuned for updates as this story develops, as the meeting tonight could be a pivotal moment in the ongoing quest for truth and accountability in the Creeslough tragedy.
