UPDATE: RTE has just announced critical appointments in its fight against disinformation and policy analysis. Kate McDonald has been named the broadcaster’s first disinformation correspondent, effective immediately, while Louise Byrne takes on a new role as a policy and analysis correspondent with the acclaimed Prime Time program.

This bold move is a response to the escalating challenges posed by misinformation online, including the rise of AI-generated deepfake content. The announcement was made on Monday as part of RTE’s ongoing commitment to its Clarity unit, which was established last year to enhance public understanding of disinformation, discourse, and democracy.

McDonald, who has been with RTE as a multimedia journalist since 2023, is eager to tackle the “growing challenge posed by false and misleading information online.” She stated:

“I’m really looking forward to building on my work investigating online harms and their real-world impact, whether that’s the ‘rabbit hole’ effects of social media algorithms or the trading of personal data to track our movements.”

Her role will focus on examining how digital systems shape the information people encounter and its effects on their daily lives.

In her newly created position, Byrne will delve into how government policies and EU regulations affect the lives of ordinary citizens. She emphasized the urgency of her task, saying:

“There’s never been a more important time for Prime Time to ensure its sharpest focus on the decisions and projects ahead.”

She will monitor and interpret key policy developments for RTE One and digital platforms.

RTE’s strategic appointments come at a crucial moment as the State plans a significant increase in capital spending to boost housing and infrastructure. This initiative will require in-depth scrutiny and analysis, making Byrne’s role vital for informing the public on impactful policy changes.

With misinformation rampant and critical policies pending, RTE’s new correspondents are set to play pivotal roles in shaping informed discourse in Ireland. As they embark on these urgent missions, audiences can expect comprehensive coverage that addresses the pressing issues affecting lives today.

Stay tuned for ongoing updates as RTE’s Clarity unit ramps up its efforts to combat misinformation and provide essential insights into policy developments.
