Sailor Claims to Have Seen MH370 Crash into Ocean 12 Years Ago

A sailor named Katherine Tee believes she may have witnessed a pivotal moment in one of aviation’s most enduring mysteries: the disappearance of Malaysian Airlines flight MH370. Tee asserts that she saw the aircraft on fire as it crashed into the Indian Ocean shortly after takeoff on March 8, 2014. The Boeing 777-200ER vanished from radar with 227 passengers and 12 crew members on board, and despite extensive search efforts, it has never been located.

Tee and her husband, Marc Horn, were sailing from Cochin, India, towards Phuket, Thailand, when she claims to have seen the plane engulfed in flames. She described observing a “bright orange” glow and a “trail of black smoke” in the sky over the Indian Ocean. The couple was approximately 40 minutes into their journey when the sighting occurred.

Tee recounted her experience to the Phuket Gazette, explaining that she initially hesitated to come forward due to doubts about her sanity. “I thought I saw a burning plane cross behind our stern from port to starboard,” she said. “Since that’s not something you see every day, I questioned my mind.” She noted that the aircraft appeared elongated and glowing, which led her to consider the possibility of a meteorite, though she ultimately dismissed that idea.

After two days of sailing, Tee and Horn docked in Phuket and learned about the ongoing search for the missing flight. At first, Tee was skeptical of her sighting, believing authorities would successfully locate the aircraft. However, upon reviewing their GPS logs from the voyage, she found that the data aligned with the confirmed contact from MH370.

“This is what convinced me to file a report with the full track data for our voyage to the relevant authorities,” Tee stated. She submitted her sighting to the Joint Agency Coordination Centre (JACC) in June 2014.

The search for MH370 was intensified late last year, yet it has rendered limited results despite the deployment of advanced technology. While some debris has washed ashore along the coasts of Africa and on islands in the Indian Ocean, these pieces represent the only tangible evidence recovered from the flight. Aviation experts suggest that the aircraft may have strayed from its intended flight path, traveling westward for several hours before disappearing.

Tee’s claims have reignited interest in the mystery surrounding MH370. As the search continues, her account adds another layer to the complex narrative of what happened on that fateful day in March.
