Sean Penn Wins Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, Skips Ceremony
BREAKING: Sean Penn has just won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor at the 98th Academy Awards, but in a surprising turn, he did not attend the ceremony to accept the prestigious award. This marks Penn’s third Oscar win, this time for his role as the villainous Colonel Steven J Lockjaw in the action thriller One Battle After Another.
The announcement, made by last year’s winner Kieran Culkin, confirmed that Penn “couldn’t be here this evening, or didn’t want to.” This absence is particularly notable given Penn’s past criticisms of the Academy, where he previously labeled it as exercising “extraordinary cowardice” regarding cultural expression.
This year, Penn triumphed over strong competitors including Benicio del Toro, Delroy Lindo, Jacob Elordi, and Stellan Skarsgård. His win follows accolades from the BAFTA and the Actor Award for his standout performance, solidifying his status in Hollywood despite his controversial stance towards the Academy.
In another significant moment of the night, Amy Madigan was awarded Best Supporting Actress for her role in the supernatural horror film Weapons, where she portrayed the memorable Aunt Gladys. Her acceptance speech resonated with emotion as she reflected on the 40-year gap since her last nomination in 1986 for Twice in a Lifetime.
Madigan humorously acknowledged her long absence from the spotlight, stating, “What’s different is I got this little gold guy,” while shaking her Oscar. She expressed gratitude towards her fellow nominees, including Elle Fanning and Teyana Taylor, and gave a heartfelt thanks to her husband, fellow actor Ed Harris, for his unwavering support throughout her career.
As the world reacts to these remarkable wins, many are eager to see how Penn’s absence will impact future Academy relationships. Fans and critics alike are expected to discuss the implications of his statement on the Academy’s role in cultural dialogues.
Stay tuned for more updates on this story as it develops. The impact of these wins extends beyond the ceremony, reflecting ongoing conversations in Hollywood about recognition and representation in film.
